View Full Version : What cooling system?

I'm looking to build a computer that will be overclockable. An AMD based system (I'm thinking an AMD Athlon XP). What cooling system would I need to OC this processor?

Go water :)

water would be good, I would give a serious look at the Alpha 8045. I like the Glaciator better, but it doesn't use the 4 mounting holes in the socket. The Alpha will give incredible performance, low noise, and portability to your system. The swiftech 462a is a little better but it is much more. It also uses the 4 holes to mount.

Go water if you have the extra cash, you'll thank me later when your ears are still functional at age 70 :D

If you want to go air and not too expensive look into the Millennium Glaciator II or CoolerMaster Heatpipe one forgot the series.

But if your going for the Swiftech or Alpha you can easily get an equivilant water cooling set as the air setup will need massive airflow which will total out to some what near the water cooling.

CoolerMaster HHC-001 Heat Pipe - $40 at Fry's.
Doing me pretty good right now ;)

As far as what I'll need, of course I'll need at least one intake fan and one output fan in the case (I'm building the computer). But, where would you put this water cooling system? Can somebody show me a picture? Would I need a Heat Sink? Anything else?

Look @ the main page it has a lot of useful articles about almost everythin...including watercooling.Go and check em out.If ur still a in a dilema come back and ask i'll b glad to help ya more...good luck

Hmmm...I was looking around on the main page and I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for, so if you have a spare minute, can you give me a link to what you are referring to on overclockers.com's main page? I would appreciate that. Thanks!

Well i'm a complete idiot considering water-cooling but i'll do my best :
First u have to determine are u goin to cool only CPU or complete system(CPU,video card,chipset,hdd..)When u've decided that,u have to decide are u goin to buy one component by one or u gonna buy water-cooling kits(which are easier to setup and pretty good imo). Then when u've decided all that and checked all avalaible solutions u have to go to some online stores such as
This one (http://www.overclockershideout.com) and check what do they have to offer you considering your ammount of money.
When u made several solutions and setups u have to come back here and list all the components u decided to buy that u think are suitable for your system.
This is the part where more experienced,(considering water cooling) with similar CPU,forum members hop in and help u choose the best for your money.
One of the nice systems i've found while surfin is Here (http://www.maxxxpert.com/english/default.htm)
its review can b found Here (http://www.cluboverclocker.com/reviews/water_cooling/maxxxpert/index.htm)
Nice article how to cool Athlons(this one is GREAT) is found Here (http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/02q1/020102/)
Koolance has also nice stuff (http://www.coolerguys.com/cpucool/koolance.shtml)
More expensive but excellent...This kit (http://www.crazypc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=120199&Product_Code=9350)....
But like i said there are ppl who know much more from their own experience u just go check these URLs and tell me what do u think?
p.s. Cmon watercooling gurus help me out hop-in hehehe

GO WITH AIR!!!!

i know i am probally the only one left that belives in air cooling your pc but look, do you really want that much water near your computer???

i know i don't and fans, as much as theese guys will tell you, they aren't that loud, i have a pc with 6 fans in it, and it isin't that much louder then my mom's stock pc

water cooling IS more effective, i will admit tht, but i don't trust my manufacturing skills that much to be risking a computer for a few degrees

a few well placed fans is all it takes

Well i'm an old-school playa, like Cowboy...i'm self-proclaimed(i often repeat that LOL) air-cooling guru or whatever.I have also Hurricane in my case 6xSunon fans 80mm+WBK38 but i'll take that chance damn it.My next system is goin to b ice watercooled!!
Are we extremes or are we not??

I am actually a little apprehensive about water near my system. I mean, I don't think it's worth the risk either. How loud are the fans? I mean, bothersome loud? Or just you can hear them loud? I don't mind some noise, but if the noise is going to prevent me from concentrating on programming and my many tasks on the computer, then I might have to go water. Which is cheaper (not that it should matter, but it plays a slight part)?

The fans i am usin are 80mm Sunon fans as i mentioned before and they are sleeve drived fans which are not as loud as fans with ball bearings and they move almost the same ammount of air-particulary 43CFM.
My complete system is pretty much loud but its due the big tower case and turbulencies that are produced by airflow in the case.
If u chose air cooling,i suggest u go for 4xSunon 80mm sleeve drived fans for the case. Two of them intake and two of them exaust fans.
And buy yourself a decent cpu cooler such as Alpha or Global Win.I am using Global win WBK38 on my comp and FOP32 on my moms and they both perform excellent and the difference is that FOP32 is a little bit quieter.

Hmmm...could you find something to compare how loud your system is? I can't really think of anything.

How realiable is water cooling that it won't leak and your whole system is then screwed-up? I think, as a programmer, noise could be counter-productive.

There are always ways to lower the case noise too.U can run those fans @5V instead of 12V which reduces their speed and noise and its quite effective way too:)
I think u should head to Sunons site and check exact specs in dB about the noise ..i can't compare the noise either lol

If you're brave and have the time to set it up, go water.
If not, get a big 80mm^2 heatsink. Your ears will survive and you'll get nice cooling.

How much $$$$$???

Voodoo Rufus

For water cooling, anywhere from $50-250. For a nice heatsink, $30-80.

Garfield

So, that's about $50 for the heat sink, then how much does a good fan system cost? I guess two intakes and two exausts. Thanks...

It depends if you worry about noise or not. Panaflos come in different sizes and speeds, are reliable, and pump good amounts of air. They're a little pricey though.

Are you suggesting to just use a HSF?

Thelemac

Picture of a watercooling setup (crammed into a *really* small case) is attached. :)

If you're concerned about noise levels and overclockability, I would recommend the Glaciator (found here (http://www.millennium-thermal.com/start.htm)) or watercooling. Dangerden is good for water cooling, though you can always get your radiator from a junkyard or auto shop (might be cheaper that way).

Very Impressive.

This is a destop not a tower right?

Whats your numbers?

Voodoo Rufus

Nice cooling setup Thelemac.

Unless you have a Cyrix CIII or Tualatin, you NEED a fan with any heatsink.

Garfield

So, for my air-cooling system, I would this Glaciator and fans (can somebody suggest some fans of good quality? How many should I get?).

When I would hook up the Glaciator HSF, do you just place it over the Processor and hook it up to the power? Or, I think I remember hearing somebody say they had to scratch something off. Is the the HSF you have to do that to?
