I have assembled my new computer and now I need to partion my HD and install Windows 98SE. My problem is that I have a new Western Digital 80 gig HD. I know you can make a boot disk and use fdisk to partition it but I cant make it recoinize that the HD is 80 gigs. It just maxs out at about 13 gigs. Can anyone please help me thanks...

-----Moved post to General Hardware-----

Sorry, but this doesn't have anything to do with memory so you'll get much better help in the GH section.

Also, when you start the FDISK program, are you enabling large disk support at the beginning when it asks?

Have you tried using the Western Digital utility disk to partition and format it?

the reason your having the problems you are is due to dos!, dos=****eness, well for that matter windows=double ****eness.

solution, use linux.

but seriously i can help you as i have had the same problem. the solution is quite simple you should do the following.

1 use fdisk to delete all partitions.
2 create a primary dos partition and tell it to use all the available space for it when it asks.
3. use lba or whatever for large disks.
4. quit fdisk
5. restart your computer
6. format your hard disk/s
7. install windows
8. right click on your hard disk go to properties and realise that dos lies, and you actually have 80gb of hard disk drive!

so to recap ignore the fact it says 13gb its lying to you all is well, just do what i said and when your in windows it will say 80gb, if u dont believe me then put 14gb on it or more! you could do this by a) knowing a little programming, b) copy a cd to your hard disk, and copy the folder and place it inside it, then copy that etc, so you get 700mb, 1400mb, 2.4gb 4.8gb 9.6gb 19.2gb.
