View Full Version : Need help with a new Linksys BEFSR41v2
Got it running okay, but it flunked a security test I did at Shields up! Turned Zone Alarm back on and of course it then passed. I'd like to know how to get it to function as a fire wall. Thanks.

Do you have DMZ hosting on? if not then you should have passed. give a bit more info on what your setup is like. Do you have any ports forwarded etc... Do you have Block WAN request enabled which will also help.

BTW Do NOT enable DMZ hosting!
fightingpiper is right, do not turn on DMZ unless you know what you are doing
and it sounds like your new to this
make sure all comps are behind the router, not in front of it
as long as there are no ports open, meaning you have to physically open them, everything should be ok security wise
but, just because they are closed doesn't mean hackers can't get in
everytime you go out, depending on what port it is, that port opens, and if someone is sniffing or scanning, they can back door you
also, if you can, change the packets to tcp\ip(icmp)
and try not to use UDP, but sometimes you have to use UDP
good luck
Yes, I'm new at this. My 1 PC is behind it, the DMZ hosting is disabled with a "zero" at the end and the block WAN request is enabled. But I don't know how to change the packets from UDP if that's what it's doing. I'm going to test it at a different security testing site now and see what happens. Thanks for your replies.
Other settings:
SPI: Enable
Multicast Pass Through: Enable
IPSec Pass Through: Enable
PPTP Pass Through: Enable
Remote Management: Disable
Remote Upgrade: Disable
The test the Linksys failed before was the leak test at Shields up!! at: https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 I then tested it at Symantec and it passed. Then I went back to Shields up!! and tested it a few times with their shield test and port prob test and it past every time! I then tested it a few more times with the leak test and the Linksys failed and Zone Alarm past every time. I guess that's as good as it gets. Thanks guys.
