View Full Version : fan/radiator/water block question
i need some help
im thinkin of getting a delta 130cfm 120mm and a blackice radiator for my first water cooling system
i have a sx830 case, and im going to mount it on the front where the two 80mm inputs were.
should the fan be sucking air in or pushing it out
also is there any waterblock that is cheap the only one i could find rite now is the sub-mini vtuned one from OCWC available through watercooledcpu.com
i need sub 16$
any help is greatly appreciated

If you can get a 172mm fan instead of the delta 120, they're much better for this application.
That mini-block works very well though you may have to figure out a mounting system for it. Look in the old posts from around Christmas time (nano block). I personally wouldn't glue it to the cpu like the other member did, but it did work great for him. Maybe try a plexiglass hold down with the four bolt holes around the socket, and a center screw to make sure it stays put level.
The blackice is a great radiator, but is made for a 120mm fan. It has the fan mounts built into it which makes modding/mounting go easier. If you're drawing air into the case through the radiator, just make sure you have plenty of exit air out the back to get rid of the heat. Maybe by adding a 80mm blowhole or something.
Sounds like your cooking up a good system. (even better considering the money spent is lower)
*edit* found that thread link for ya...http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49011&highlight=nanoblock
In my opinion, you'd be better off with a pair of low noise 120x38mm 86cfm fans in push-pull on your radiator, Their performance is synergistic and they are considerably more quiet than a single 120mm 130cfm. That's what I use in my Antec 840 case.

Try Aquastealth.com (http://www.aquastealth.com) if you want a decent waterblcok for not mucn money. They have an aluminum block for $15.99 and you can make a hold down yourself.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I nibbled out the lower front 80mm fan mount to accomodate the 120mm and my setup is drawing fresh air in from the front and dumping it into the case. At 86cfm, the 830/840 case will replace the air inside it every 3-4 seconds. The remaining three 80mm fan openings have Panaflo low noise, 26cfm fans exhausting air. Those, combined with the PSU fan, keep the case pressure slightly positive. Running my setup with a processor as high as 115Watts, the case temperature averages about 2-3C above my PC room temperature.
