i Have this old IDE hard drive from my last computer that broke down. it works (im pretty sure) i put it in my new computer to see if the computer recognized it in bios and it did. i would like to use it as an external hardrive but i want to get the pictures and videos and music off of there. will putting it in an enclosure let me hook it up and take what i want out. or is there something special i have to do since i have my old operating system on there and everything.
Also any recomendations toward an enclosure would help me out thanks for the help guys.

You shouldnt need to do anything special, other than put in an enclousre.
I have the SATA version of this one. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817145133) Works fine for me.

Your welcome,
If your new motherboard uses a different chipset, its unlikely. What OS are you using? If you are using XP some people have had luck doing a repair install.
:welcome: to the forums BTW

Just as a sidenote, I think you might have to set the jumper to 'master', but I'm not positive on that.

i got a 3.5" IDE hard drive and i got a a friend who has a broken laptop and shes looking to do the same thing i am. Is there a difference in the kind of enclosure i should get for her. If she has a 2.5" hard drive would i able to just plug it in to my enclosure to get her pics off and then keep mine in there, or is there a different connector or something?

Ahh yes, I forgot about that. Been a long time since I've used anything IDE personally

Probably not, Laptop HD's are smaller and use a 2.5" ide (if it is IDE). If her laptop is newer, it may be sata. You should be able to find out what kind of drive it uses by checking the manfuacturer's web site.

i finally got my enclosure it works great and very cheap. it hold the HD real well its nice and solid. it does get a little hot when it runs for a while but ill rarely do that. it does go slow (a few hours to format) but the HD was made like 7 years ago so im happy to just get my music and pictures back. thanks for the help guys.
