View Full Version : Folding like a snail...
Okay, so now I have run the CPU folder with 50% CPU usage (estimate) for about 10 hours. Finished one "2500" unit. Got 84 points from that. Have been running a "300" unit (huge blob) for about 3 hours and 42/300 done. Depressed and desperate.
Also, to increase efficieny, installed VMware Server, and VMed Ubuntu 8.04. Can't honestly figure out how to get the internet connection working on it...(-> can't download F@H or any work.) Also Windows spams me with a "detected an IP-address conflict with another system in the network". Any help? Really want to get some serious points :/ The current rate is just bull****.

Well, the IP address conflict is definitely the reason you can't connect to the internet. How is your local LAN setup? Do you have a router assigning the IP addresses (DHCP)? You need to figure out why 2 computers on your network have the same IP address.
As far as VM/Ubuntu is concerned, you need to setup the network connection as "bridged". If you shutdown Ubuntu, you should see "Ethernet - Bridged" under the Devices heading.
Post up the spec's on the system you're folding on, and then we can make recommendations.
We'll get you rolling, don't worry. Maybe not as fast as Bloodhound SSC, the 1000 mph car, though: :) :)
I am sure I already typed my specs in somewhere, but they don't seem to be that easily accessible, so I guess I'll post them:
MSI NF520 mobo (model K9N V2 Neo... I think)
Athlon 64X2 5600 @stock 2.9 (can only pull 3.2 out of it, decided it's not worth the trouble) A wasted Zalman CNPS9700 on it. =/
4 GB Kingston VRAM ddr2 800 5-5-5-15 (3.3 GB usable)
SMG SP F1 750 GB
Club3D Radeon HD 4850 (somehow defective, most propably. I have occasional black screens and other minor trouble with it. Also, GPU crashes after 15 or so to 30 or so secs of folding with the GPU folder) Will be RMAing sometime soon, and get a 4870 or GTX260 in its place
WinXPPro 32-bit
Antec300, extra cooling, purple CCFLs, OCZ StealthXtream 600W. That's about it. Ask if anything else is needed.
And on the IP address issue: It only happens when the VM is running. As soon as I shut the Ubuntu down, the warning stops. So it's the virtual machine and my running OS that have the same IP. The connection is bridged. FWIW, local LAN is just my and my GF's PC plugged via ethernet cable to the router. Have no idea about the router assigning IPs or not.
Now then. I still wonder if I'm folding at a speed that represents the actual crappiness of my PC? (CPU, still hope the graphics card would work)

Have you allowed an Exception in Windows Firewall for VMWare Server
And In Ubuntu you can Change the IP address there too
Also did you give the -smp flag to the ./fah6 -smp - verbosity 9 - local
as seems you are only running uni processor client at the moment
So for right now, a good SMP folding client will serve you best.
When the FAH client is working, it makes up a log file called "fahlog.txt". Would you locate that file, move all the way to the very first 50 lines, and copy and paste them into a post, here?
Then I'll know just what to say!
You're stuffed! :)
Just kidding! :D
I don't use Windows Firewall, running on Comodo instead. The VMWare is a trusted application, all ports open for it. No idea of how to go on about the -smp flag. In linux? In Win? Detailed info please, or a link to instructions. I'm a noob.
fahlog doesn't hold anything of interest IMO.

And so on.
Setting your cpu usage over 50% will help folding speed also.
Well, it tells me a lot. :)
The FAH client you're running can run in SMP mode - and get you a lot more points.
So,
1) Start the client, so the tray icon is in the lower right hand corner.
2) Put the mouse pointer, over that icon, and select "configure" from the list of options it displays.
3) Click on the "Advanced Tab".
4) Near the bottom of that window, find the "Additional client parameters" line and add this, exactly:
Fold for Adak! :p
No, sorry:
-smp -verbosity 9
That's one space, a hypen then no space, and smp all lowercase. Then, one space, verbosity (also all lowercase letters), one space, and 9
Then click on "OK" or "Apply", and then click on the OK button.
Now, again right click on the systray icon, and select "Quit". Wait 30 seconds, (because 4 threads have to be stopped), and then re-start the FAH client, like normal.
Your current WU will be wiped out, and you will d/l and begin folding SMP WU's , from now on (if your other parameters allow it).
The verbosity 9 flag will make the fahlog.txt entries more descriptive, and help troubleshoot whatever problems may arise.
These initializing strings or "flag" as we call them, are standard across most of the FAH clients - Windows or Linux.
Let me know how that works.
Well that's interesting. Set it as you told me to, now whenever the program is run, it totally crashes/simply just disappears from the tray, processes, and everywhere. (tray icon stays until I glide my cursor onto it, ofcourse)

for the smp client to work have you ran the Install Bat to setup MPICH
Remember you need to do this under and Administrative Account
Enter your username and password you wish to run the client as (same as last version --Your Windows Login)"You MUST have a password and be signed into the account with that password"
I setuped the SMP client as adviced on the MPICH setup guide site. It has now been running for a bit over 10 mins and not even a percent of advancement. Will keep it running. (all 4 processes are running as they're supposed to).
E: still 0 % after 25 minutes.

%/Frame will depend on what WU it is currently processing some like the 2665 can take 40-60mins /frame depending also on CPU processing capabilities
Ookay. I guess I won't be getting entries for the i7 system draw then. No way I'll get 25k points done even during this year with this rig at its current state...
You should install FahMon (http://www.fahmon.net) so you can more accurately monitor progress with PPD estimates, ETAs for WU completion, etc.
Then you'll know whether or not you're going to make an entry for the i7 ;)
Fahmon says it has done absolutely nothing so far. ETA 0mn. --> 1 h 18 mn of nothing. And all free cpu cycles (50-75% of my CPU, approx.) for that nothing. It's a 1760 point credited unit. But.. :(

FAHMon needs a percentage or three to calculate the PPD. Give it some time.
Just looked up benchmarks for a similar unit on mine, and yeah, yours should have progressed by now. Post the current log and let us take a look.
What does your "task manager" show you? It "should" show both cores pegged @ 100%

I also noticed that your IP address appears to be a public address, like you have a cable modem or DSL link directly to your computer, which could be part of the issue with VMWare. If you set the client NIC in VMWare Server to NAT instead of, I am assuming you have it set bridged, you should be able to get online with that Ubuntu VM.

Also, I noticed that it appears that you are turning in work for team 0. It seems that you would get much better PPD if that 0 was a 32.:D I will have to let someone else explain how if you need help though, as I am about 1500 miles from home and posting from my blackberry is quite hard as things are starting to get harder to see these days.
Hey BG-0, I see you're turning in work for the team now, but not SMP work units.
Have you run "install.bat" yet?
Yes, as I said, I run the install.bat as the website for SMP setup adviced.
One logfile present with the SMP folder contains this:

On another note, I worked for about 10 minutes for team 0, before I was told I do not need to do anything special to fold for team 32, and entering the team was just entering 32, not some 6-digit kinky code.
Yet another note, I used the non-SMP client for the first work I did. Now I'm trying to process an SMP unit, and it does nothing.

Fahmon says it has done absolutely nothing so far. ETA 0mn. --> 1 h 18 mn of nothing. And all free cpu cycles (50-75% of my CPU, approx.) for that nothing. It's a 1760 point credited unit. But.. :(
Your CPU usage should be in the neighborhood of 100%, unless you set it differently. Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) performance tab should have both cores pegged.
I'm running a similar processor to you (Opty 165 @ 2.5GHz) and those units take about 1/2 hour per step, assuming I'm not running anything else. They can take considerably more time if I have a game going.
Maybe someone else can help with this:
BG-0's
[13:04:18] - Calling 'mpiexec -np 4 -channel auto -host 127.0.0.1 FahCore_a1.exe
-dir work/ -suffix 01 -priority 96 -checkpoint 5 -verbose -lifeline 2268 -version 623'
Outback_Jon's
[15:31:06] - Calling 'mpiexec -np 4 -channel auto -host 127.0.0.1 FahCore_a1.exe
-dir work/ -suffix 04 -cpu 95 -checkpoint 30 -forceasm -verbose -lifeline 1272 -version 623'
I'm curious about the "-suffix 04" entry. It's the only difference I see that I don't understand. (Simply because I don't know what it controls)
I have four FahCores running at 17-25% CPU usage each. But honestly, if it takes more than 90 minutes to make one percent of a 1760 point WU, I'm saying no thanks. I don't want to spend more than 6 full days to finish one work unit. :(
Wow. I just started it for fun, and it has done 1000 remaining steps of the first 5000(=1 percent) in 10 minutes, after that another percent in 44 mins. Not really fast, but at least it's process. I guess it's working pretty properly now... Just wish the GPU folder was stable.
Edit: Wow. The GPU folder is such a workhorse. Had it running for quite a while yesterday just left it running when I went to my mate's and it had finished two WUs, and now I have a bit over 900 points done... Still, I wonder how it didn't crash, as while I had tested it a few times, the GPU crashed within about 15-30 mins of working at max. Didn't play anything.

Nope, not really fast, but we're working with older processors here. That time seems pretty good if you're running the GPU2 client on an ATI. The ATI's tie up a bit of processor resources. Glad it's working for you.

Yep, they do pound out the points. :)
