What software would I need to capture and save video clips from a dvd in my dvd-rom drive?

Would Adobe Premiere work?

I use VideoWave to capture videos and clips from my video camera and VCR. It's easy to use, but costs around $100.

please refrain from posting about copying copyrighted material it is against forum rules. My suggestion is to delete your original post before a mod sees it and does it for you.

I think you're jumping to a conclusion about copying protected material. No where in Patrick's post did he say anything about copying protected material. Also, you did not consider the possibility that he's doing his copying as a business and as such has or will pay the appropriate royalties.

I am sorry if I was jumping to a conclusion but he stated that he wanted to copy from a dvd in the drive. This is a serious issue for the forum and can lead to it being shut down. I personally do not want that to happen.

There's also the issue of what he's planning to do with the (assumed) copyrighted material. If he's doing legitimate research and gives proper credit and is doing so without trying to make money, then it's legit. For example, as a writer of technical papers, I routinely read, copy, use and cite other writer's copyrighted material.

I agree in principal with your statement that stealing copyrighted material is wrong. But, IMO, it's unfair of you to outright accuse someone of wrongdoing without all of the facts. Forum rules are the ultimate authority here of course, but, he should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

But, I apologize for the digression. Let us move this discussion to the Debates forum to see if we can stir some things up!

I was just trying to save him and you from the warning you will recieve from a mod when they see this thread. I never made the statement about stealing copyrighted material is wrong. I just said that the posting about it is against the forum rules. I am not going to go into my personal beliefs on the subject. If you want a debate on the matter start one in the debates forum. Have a nice day:beer:

Please keep this discussion very tightly on-topic. We do not condone discussions involving copyright violations, so tread lightly on this subject...

Note to Patrick G; you've got over a hundred posts, so it's reasonable to assume you've read forum rules:

Warez, Crackz, and Copyrighted material

This is to clarify the position of this site regarding Warez information and warez sites, Crackz and information about crackz, and the posting and downloading of copyrighted material.

Overclockers prohibits the promotion of, and reference to, any program or website which contains or distributes Warez, Crackz, and pirated copyrighted material, including but not limited to music and video.

Discussion of Warez, crackz, and pirated copyrighted material is not permitted in this forum. Any offer to provide or request to receive warez, crackz, and bootleg material will be deleted without notice and the offender will be warned. A repeat offense is grounds for permanent dismissal, without recourse, from these forums.

This is a serious issue for this Forum. Allowing discussion of and, by extension condoning the distribution of, said information jeopardizes the very existence of this Forum. As such, it will not be tolerated. For the long-term future of this site, please abide by this rule.

I'm putting together a presentation for school using a clip from an instructional dvd for the class. I have already cleared this with both the instructor and the author. Thanks.

Tell me something though. How would this be different from using video clips from movies in avatars? Why is that okay?

I don't know. All I know is that discusion of copying copyrighted material is a big NoNo around here. I am sorry if I came across in a bad way. I have recieved a warning from a mod before and it is not something I want to happen again. If you are more specific in what your question is then you will get better answers and you can avoid misconceptions. Good luck on your project.

You did the right thing.

When it comes to copyrighted material we do like to stop it before it gets started. I'll agree what you're doing is valid, it just takes one person to start a good thread off bad, however.

Please excuse our paranoia on the subject, it's just that it is the one thing that could bring Overclockers.com to its knees. Please excuse any member that jumps in as Kendan did, he's only doing what we ask all our members to do...make sure rules aren't broken if a subject looks to be a touchy one.

Carry on and enjoy the forums...just keep it clean.

Thanks. :D
