I just got my stuff in the mail to build my new PC today. I'm returning the mobo for a different one so it'll be a few days before I can actually do any work on the rig. Anyway, I plugged in my corsair psu to my case fans and flipped the switch but nothing happened. The fan didn't spin nor did the case fans. Is the psu dead or does it only work when the whole system is plugged into it?
It needs the power on signal from the motherboard. Otherwise it won't power up. The switch on the back is only used to stop it from powering up, it's not for powering up purposes.

So I won't know if the psu works until I build the PC?

You can take a paper clip (bent in a U shape) and connect the green wire on the 24 pin ATX connector to any black (ground) wire on the 24 pin ATX connector to power up the PSU when not hooked to a motherboard.

Or a piece of wire, if you have one of those. Here are photos on how to do it (http://www.theraptorpit.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1972).
