View Full Version : Clicking Sound = LAG!

About every three hours now, starting tonight, a will hear a single CLICK coming from my case, and then everything gets lagged for a few seconds and the a brief second or two of free mouse movement, and then lagged again, lasts about a whole minute and a half before it finally locks.
I'll power it down, let it sit for about 30 seconds and power it back on, just as the Windows 2000 splash screen appears, I hear it again, and it wants to do a check on G:. Everytime, it's G:. I don't know what the hell is going on, temps are fine up to and during the lag (Low 30s) and airflow, as you can see in my sig, is quite well in this case. Running with 3 HDDs, a Fujitsu 10GB IDE and 2 Western Digital 20GB IDEs. None of these drives are even a good year old yet.
What is wrong?!

hmmmmm
Explain the sound in better detail?
the only thing that will make noises in your case are Fans, CDROM(S) or your hdd's...
id almost bet you have a hdd failing...
even tho there not old, my ibm 20gig died in 3 months..
it may a soft click then got louder and started crunching/grinding noise...
then it wouldnt boot, and in the bios the drive came up scrambled like "gfdrgd3453" with weird letters and i couldnt load windoze..
so if i were you, id back up everything possible now, justy in case..
also try unplaugging all your fans, and open your case up and try and see where the sound is comming from, if its a hdd, then ave each one being accessed at a different time, and see if you can figure out which one is clicking...
sry man... but IMO you maybe loseing a hdd, and yea they could last a day, month, week or 5mins... but the cooler u keep it the better chance u have of keeeping that drive alive if one is actually going dead.... hope i helped out... id just hate you to have to lose what ive had be4, and many others...

Closest in detail I can get of the sound, is the sound of an empty gun trying to fire, except a little louder. The sound is coming from the front of the case, which is where all my HDDs are at.

That's an easy one. It's your HDD. Your heads are going out. Best get yourself a new HDD and clone that clicking one, because it's close to dying.
I had a silimar problem, but fortunatley, I was able to RMA my HDD without any problems.

Return Merchandise Authorization
Before returning computer equipment, you need to contact the reseller/manufacturer and obtain this. It is sort of a tracking thing.

Since it keeps defaulting to checking G: everytime that happens, I have localized which drive (Thanks to PartitionMagic 7) has that partition.
It's the Western Digital 20GB (Not the WD 20.5GB). Oh well, always needed a good reason to go buy a new 60 or 80GB drive :D.

THAT'S the spirit!
"What's that smell? Oh well, I'll just buy a new mobo and CPU."
"I hear clicking. Better buy a new DVD-ROM, CD-RW, SCSI CD-ROM, and replace both HDD's."
"Wow, what was that flash? I might as well replace all my LED's, neons, CCT's, and why not, the monitor too."

LOL, well I got to about the fourth backup CD before the thing went kaput. So I brought in my backup system (AMD K6-2 500), it already had a Maxtor HDD in it, but Windows 2000 on it had gone kablewie from the last time I used it, so I scrounged up my 98 SE CD and installed it, to find out, the mystery Maxtor was 30GB! The dead WD seemed to work just fine, dangling outside of the backup's case and vertically inclined. So managed to save all the import stuff, and everything synced just perfectly when I put the 30GB into my tower. No cross-linked files or programs, everything back to normal.
Though my dad does seem to think it's poor power distribution that caused it's early death. I dunno, a 300W Leadman has been doing the job, even when I had more power sucking appliances in this case.
Though I am still on the look out for a bigger drive :D, trying to limit the number of drives in here.
