I've used a DVI to HDMI cable and for the first time connected my 32" LCD to my PC.
I have an HD4870 and from what I understand it should be capable of sending Audio as well as Video through said DVI-HDMI cable.
I connected the cable to the TV and the 2nd DVI in my video card and by switching to 'PC' mode on the TV it immediately showed on the TV the same picture my 22" LCD Monitor shows,
the problem is however that I can't get the built-in TV speakers to work and instead must use the speakers from my computer.
So my question is: is there any way to make the built-in speakers to work?
Also, does it matter what resolution is set on the desktop when I run HD/FHD movies? (the TV is HDR)
thanks in advance

IIRC, you'll need the "special" DVI->HDMI adapter in order to have it able to also carry the audio signal as normal adapter is missing a pin that needs to carry audio signal. this is the adapter that usually will come w/ the card. if not, you can order it from ATI. and that's what I'm using in my bedroom HTPC client, a 2600Pro --> ATI's DVI/HDMI adapter --> got both audio + video on the TV.
(p.s. someone correct me if I'm wrong...... )
BTW, :welcome: to the forum!!

ouch...
I have that adapter but instead of buying an HDMI-HDMI cable I thought it would save me the mess and instead I bought a DVI-HDMI cable.
hope someone else could tell me otherwise :bang head
thanks for the welcome by the way, I like what I see so far :)

im kinda in the same boat.
my 32" in my room itst a PC ready tv. but i do connect it threw a hdmi-dvi adapter. i resize my desktop to my tv. works great. but no sound. i have to use pc speakers. now i have audio RCA that i hook up to my sound card, but i still cannot not get the onboard tv speakers to work.
now when i hook it up to my 52" bravia in the living room, i hook it up the same way, and when i use the audio rca to my sound card im able to get the tv speakers to work.
could my 32" not pc ready tv be the root to why i cant get my audio working?
hope i didnt thread jack. we have the same issue i didnt want to start another thread on this.

There have been a few reports of people getting sound using a monoprice dvi to hdmi cable. However this could be a hit or miss type thing, as I tried it with a monster cable one and got no audio. You best bet is to get a hddi to hdmi cable over at monoprice and use the ati dongle.

If you look at the pins on the ATI DVI-HDMI adapter you should see a few extra pins on the DVI end than you will see on just about any other DVI cable or adapter. ATI uses these extra pins on the DVI side of the adapter to pass the audio. I have yet to see any other manufacterer make a DVI cable or adapter that has these extra pins for audio.

JOIC,
Did you switch the default audio device in windows to the ATI sound device?
Cant think of what it is called right at the moment as my gaming machine is unplugged at the minute. I am sure someone here can peruse their sound settings though and tell you :)

There were alot of people having that issue. It would seem that ATI had issues with a few AVR. I know Yamaha and Denon and Onkyo were a few.

is it even worth the trouble of making it work? i mean how does it compare to a dedicated soundcard?? or is it only as good as onboard?

About three weeks ago I bought a HD4830 with HDMI, not that ATI dongle version. I would say the sound is better then the AuzenTech with modded Op-amps I was running before. Not really sure why but audio seems clearer and louder with HDMI then with my old sound card.
