View Full Version : cheap folding box?
I was originally going to use my other two comps in a network for just folding but the more I thought about it it would be more of a waste of electricity for the progress i would get. What I have decided to do is build a faster box and just add it instead of the 2 slower boxes. The 2 slow boxes I have are a gateway p3 450 and a p 200. I think that I would get more production out of buying a new mobo and processor and power supply for the gateway and use the rest of the comoponents.
Now for the real tough question. I am on a limited budget because I am laid off right now and I dont want to spend anymore than I have to. What proc, mobo, and psu can I buy for about $150?

I ordered a Antec 300w psu on the 17th and it arrived yesterday(21st) 35.00+8.00 shipping=43.00. ATX by the way. I'm not sure what your dell would be. I've deleted the seller on the chance it might be considered advertising. PM me if you want to know who they are :)

Cheap generic case with 300 watt psu ($35)
ECS K7S5A ($60)
Duron 800 ($39)
My suggestion. The K7S5A uses either SDRAM or DDR, depending on what you have. You might even be able to get by without the psu.

The K7S5A might be the ultimate mobo for building dedicated Folding boxes.... the only complaint is that it doesn't have onboard video....

Yep, I agree. But it is a better overclocker than others with the onboard video...and it comes with the onboard LAN!
Sickboy, have you seen the price or the K7S5A at GNS? $99, cough, cough...I got one out of their bargain bin for $69 on time, a return, I think.

Still haven't been over there yet. A coworker told me about a place on Como just east of Stinson (right in my 'hood) that I'm going to go to after work.
I really am not worried about video or anything else because its all in the gateway box (junk). just a mobo and proc and psu. Might have to buy a different hsf cause im gonna overclock it though. Thanks to all responding.

Hmmm. Sure you don't mean on Larpenteur just east of Stinson? There is a place there called Que Computers. It is across the street from Subway. They have a lot of used stuff there, sometimes I go there for some fans or an extra floppy, a cable, etc. A lot of junk, too.
If there is a place on como, I would like to find it, I am going to drive by there later and have a look. :) I live right in that general area, as well...

Does Como turn in to Larpenteur? Because that's the name of the place. A lot of used junk there.... small hard drives, old video cards and nics, cases, psu's, etc.
It'd be a great place to get stuff for a folding box, though (aside from the mobo and CPU, they were a little overpriced in that dept.)
