does anyone know what degaussing a monitor does????
i am bored as hell and wondering about that
i just degaussed my monitor too
in simple words its demagnetizing your screen..i guess
From http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/d/degauss.html:
To remove magnetism from a device. The term is usually used in reference to color monitors and other display devices that use a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). These devices aim electrons onto the display screen by creating magnetic fields inside the CRT. External magnetic forces -- such as the earth's natural magnetism or a magnet placed close to the monitor -- can magnetize the shadow mask, causing distorted images and colors.
To remove this external magnetic forces, most monitors automatically degauss the CRT whenever you turn on the monitor. In addition, many monitors have a manual degauss button that performs a more thorough degaussing of the CRT. You can also use an external degausser that degausses the monitor from the outside. Since it may be impossible to remove the external magnetic force, degaussing works by re-aligning the magnetic fields inside the CRT to compensate for the external magnetism.
You can also degauss magnetic media, such as disks, which removes all data from the media.

but howstuffworks.com seems to be down for some reason, crappy.....
i have a brilliance 105 which will degauss by software and when turning it on (?) but thats something i dont use to do. wish there was a button not by software. but how often should i degauss the screen? mine never had problems with distorted colors and imgs.

The Dells I work with are made by Sony. They have a OSD (On Screen Display) You press a button on the monitor and a menu comes up. One of the options in the menu is to degauss. The other options are to resize and reshape the display. My Hitachi at home is very similar.

My Dell monitor does the same thing. Just degaussed!

i think that will depend a lot on the ambient the monitor is in. read the thread about shaking above 60Hz in the v and s cards forum.
Really? The monitor can shake because that happens to me. I' ll take a look over there

Generally, if you have the option to do it, you should degauss about once a week- two weeks. If you can't, then the ony option is to turn your monitor off when you're not using it for extended periods of time. It will eventually demagnetize itself, but it takes a while.

i dont think any monitor will eventually demagnetise itself. i noticed mine will do it for itslef only when i turn it on, then i need to use the software if i want to do it again.
ive payed more attention to that after start reading this thread and it seems to me now that once in a week is really too often. i dont think there is much magnetism surrounding my monitor here and i could efficiently degauss the screen every past 10 minutes, am just wondering about any issues on doing that? does anyone know if degaussing can cause any damage to the monitor?
