The screenpics will say more than I can. This not the same behaviour all the time, just certain WUs which can go up to 50hrs./WU Anyone see this before? Any ideas?

X2 3800+ @ stock speeds running native Ubuntu 8.10 BTW, one CPU can go down to %25 with the other @ %100 Thanks as always folks!

Here's the log:

augie@augie-desktopu1:~/fah$ ./fah6 -forceasm -verbosity 9 -smp

You may need more Ram as some smp clients will need to use quite a bit of Ram and with only 1001mb for total that OS and Client , this may be an issue.
Also have had better Running on Ubuntu 8.04 64bit LTS that did on 8.10

You should dump 8.10 Ubuntu, because it has a well known fault in it, which causes SMP operations to be slowed by about 15%.

How this will manifest itself on different SMP WU's, is anybody's guess.

The version you want is "Hardy Heron", 8.04.

Someone has not been reading my sticky for Linux Ubuntu and SMP install guide. :D

Augie, say it ain't so: team 13790! :p

JS: I recently increased the memory on all of my VM's to 1200MB, because I was starting to see more and more swapfile usage.

I agree with both JS and Adak, version 8.04 seems to be the best for PPD right now.

I have read it Adak and for some reason 8.04 LTS errors out when loading on the X2 but I had no problems loading the same image on my main quad rig as a VM. On the X2, 8.04 kept throwing up disk read errors, saying something like dirty lens or scratched CD I believe, after trying several CD's burnt at the lowest speed using ISOBurn. Vista and W7 loaded just fine here along with 8.10 so I don't get it.:bang head

Well, I have other opticals but I sure don't feel like switching a burner out for an older CD-ROM.

As to the team number, I must have had one too many  ;):D

Yea, you just might have a bad optical drive; I get more-than-average optic drive failures as I live in a dust prone area. I bought an external dvd/cd-rw which I keep in a(dust-free) drawer, and only deploy when an OS needs installed.

I'll say that's a pretty good binge...almost 4yr.s. ;););)

Hmm, ya'll have convinced me now about 8.04 and the %15 gain in PPD which is nothing to sneeze at, not that I really needed convincing!

I was also thinking of OC'ing the X2 again using the ASUS OC utility(I have an A8N-E in there) to at least %10 which is easy for an OC'ing n00b, I've since forgotten all that I learnt so all it will take is installing a temporary XP so's I can copy that to the BIOS. Gotta love KVMs for the install!

I'll break out the Phillips screwdriver and make the change. This should all happen tomorrow as the current WU will be done by then.

BTW ihrsetrdr, I'll take the Pepsi tomorrow.;):D

OK, seems like ImgBurn 2,4,2 had an issue with burn speed and as I saw there was now 2.4.4 I used this to burn the 8.04.2 LTS X64 at 4X and it loaded oh so cleanly!WOOT!!!

Also with this updated version, I didn't have to install the ia-32libs as they were already current and there were way fewer updates to grab too! The cores are not doing the Tennessee waltz anymore either as both are nearly pinned, it's more like a whirling dervish!:D

Time now to wait and see the difference as I have the same 2669 WU crunching ATM. Here's what the monitor shows and no swap being used either! I can also return my screwdriver to its case as the optical is working fine.;):beer:

EDIT: Oh cow patties! It's back to the same thing! Well, back to the drawing board.:(
EDIT2: OK, it must have been a PEBKAC, I deleted everything relating to 2669 and the 2677 WU is now running @ 22min./frame=36.7hrs. which seems reasonable and both cores are pinned.:)

Thanks for that man as I'm basically a *nix n00b. I'm glad I finally got a reason to learn a bit of *nix and it's getting easier all the time.:)

Anyways, the WU is at %54, the memory use has gone up from %53 to %73 and Swap has gone from 0 to 45MB. I'll assume this is normal behaviour. I'll be looking for another gig of memory now if the price is right. I have to follow the laws of 'Affordable Folding' or otherwise called wifey.;)

Actually it was the expansion of my folding farm that gave me the impetus to become involved with Linux(the "free-as-in-beer" factor) as I was running out of Windows licenses; later, I began to appreciate & embrace the "free-as-in-Freedom" aspect of using Linux. Even tho' I've purchased additional XP licenses for the GPU2 rigs, my preference for daily computational usage is oriented towards the Open Source (http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php) realm.

"*nix n00b" I consider myself to be an intermediate *nix n00b, with hopes of someday becoming a little more advanced *nix n00b. ;)
