Do 3x4GB kits exist? for X58 boards (not ECC for 5500 or 5520 -- I think those kits are out there already)

Or even 3x3GB?

I'd like to get 9 or 12gb of RAM, but not fill up so many slots -- and perhaps take it easier on the memory controller.

I just see ECC memory at that capacity.

That doesn't work with the i7, right?

All I can see that is 4gb sticks are like $400 for non-ECC unbuffered, but they are 204 pin?

Question is why do you need more than 4GB of ram for a desktop? Unless you are running multiple instances of a VM I don't see why you need that much. I have 8GB in my Desktop and I never touch more than 4GB at a time.
