In overclocking the memory clock on my GeForce 2 MX-400, would I need to buy memory heatsinks?
i dont use them with mine. but thats only because i cant find a place to get them. anyway, ive never seen - or felt - mine that hot. i have the memory frequency at 200MHz, stock is 166.
thats something ive always been curious about. as i said, the mem chips on mine never got hot enough for me to feel it on my fingers, so what could a ramsink do anyway? theres nothing there for it to dissipate. but ppl claim they r essential and they will help any card when overclocking.
i think that if your temps inside the case r not hot the ramsinks on the mx will make a very little difference. if you get to direct some cold airflow above the card it will be much better then only installing the ramsinks.
imo

yeah, I have my memory at 252 and my core clock at 200, but i'll probably put that up a lil higher later. and, like you said, i didnt feel any heat on the memory chips when i opened up my case so you must be right....
thanks!

I opted for a cheap solution... radioshack heatsinks. They're small black, have 5 fins, and cost about $1.59 each. I attached them with artic silver 2 and superglue although there is a risk to this method as it can short out the memory and ruin the card.
I have 2x 80mm fans blowing in near my pci and agp slots, so that probably helps a lot.
I got my GF2 Ti's memory from 401 to 527, although I usually run it between 505 and 520.
I'd say do it, if not for performance, then for the fun of it!
Memory sinks won't really do anything until you have really fast memory that you are trying to push really far. It just don't get hot enough in most instances. The MX400 doesn't have super fast memory, so it should be ok.
But they sure do look cool! That's why I got 'em.:D

Sooooooooo...
If anything, I'll probably just position a fan to blow straight on it. I'm not going for looks here.
