View Full Version : transmission cooler for H2O cooling?

I was talking to my autoshop teacher about where to find a heatercore, and told him what it is for, he suggested using a transmission cooler. Anyone have thoughts/suggestions/experiences with this? I'm a complete newbie to water cooling and any help would be appreciated..

Thanks

I have a transmission cooler right now and its ok

a heatercore would be better though because its copper instead of aluminum

Transmission coolers cool oil, right? If they do, they might not be as efficient as a heater core/radiator because they were designed for the viscosity of oil.

I thought one would be better then one made to cool water. For one oil in harder to cool and at certain temps will catch fire. But I guess I could be wrong.

I think oil coolers are designed differently. I don't know the specifics, but I read on the forums that heater cores are better than oil coolers. Maybe flow restriction.

Oil has different properties so a cooler for it will work well for those properties, not those of water. The higher viscosity and (usually) higher pressure of the oil will mean a different setup is required. A heatercore should be better than an oil cooler.

The only difference between a radiator, oil cooler, and heater core are their size, and the fluid that normally circulates in it. Other than that, they work exactly the same.

I'm using an aluminum transmission fluid cooler myself... works great and IMO looks better than a heater core... The one I got has a spiral threaded piece of aluminum that runs through the center of the actual coolers tubing... it keeps the fluid out of the center and toward the walls of the cooler for better heat dissapation:D

trans coolers aren't effective, oil cooler might work

used trans cooler before wasn't impressed at all just one for a 4 cylinder car

Do you have one res0r9lm? I do and it works great... look at my temps in my sig... I only have an 80mm generic fan and the dual fans off of a Vantec slot 1 HSF on it... and I made the block too... only aluminum. Here's a quick list:

Waterblock=Aluminum... made by me by cross drilling chambers.
Pump=Rio 800 220 GPH (sucks)
3/8" ID tubing... losing a good portion of my GPH
Radiator=Aluminum Transmission Fluid cooler... VERY effective.

*Oh and I just wanted to add that my bedroom is SUPER warm... and I don't have ANY other fans except the one in the power supply... even the one I took off of my voodoo 5 and put on my chipset died...*

yea I have one around hear somewhere. got from local auto parts store. yours must be better than mine is all I can say. you might have one made for tow and mine is just replacement and is only rated for a 4 cyl.

Let me start this one off better... sorry if I came off rude on my last post... no excuse for it... but after reading through it... it gives off bad vibes:p res0r9lm does yours have a peice of metal running through the center?

I have a evaparator core got out of a water fountain like the ones in school the you drink out of works really good. kinda big and have to use a seprate pump due to restriction

hard to judge how well cpu is being cooled by what mb is reporting. had 800 duron with fop32 hsf @43c made wb stay same temp so got one from overclockerz.com and same temp so then got a 120w pelt now went down to 23c later switched to mc 462 hsf now back up to 40c put pelt back on down to 26c replaced cpu with 1400 no pelt and its at 40c again. so if you go buy what mb is reporting a 800 duron runs as hot as 1.4 tbird
and a fop32 is as good as water cooling. there no way

Usually doesn't matter what it's rated for, as most car transmissions are different. The transmission oil cooler for my old 89' tercel was part of the radiator. Some other cars, it's separate. Don't forget, most people tend to recommend what has worked for them, not necessarily what performs the best.

I have an aftermarket transmission cooler for a 3/4 Chevy van. It is Flex-o-lite brand and I bought it from Autozone. It has copper tubes and aluminum fins.

What about one made by Crane. The one I seen was for a dragster. I just thought of it I might have to take a look at it again.

i have an oil radiator from Serck Aviation, got it off ebay for $9 =)

sucked cleaning the oil out but water temps are 2C or less above ambient with two 2300rpm enermax fans on it. With my old radiator from overclockers hideout the water was usually 6C or more above ambient with the same fans.
