There's an example of the speaker.
Kenwood + Japan researchers made this :

It's so thin!
They said they want to put these in public transportation places, like airports etc. But considering how little power these use and how flat they are, you could put it anywhere.

This means conventional speakers will become ridiculously cheap for a while :D
Although I'm not sure about how something like that can handle low frequencies.

Err, nothing new on the speaker front. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_loudspeaker
Just a minor evolution on those designs.

Saw that a while back on another forum, though still not sure how good the quality of this kind of speaker can be. I'm very picky about quality after having several 'mid range' audiophile headphones for years now. When I try to go back to similarly-priced speakers the sound is just terrible, unless I spend a noticeable amount of $ on somewhat expensive good quality speakers along with a good amp.
Kind of like if you're used to playing at 1920x1200 8xAA games made in the past 1year and then all of a sudden go back to 1024x768 0xAA games of 7 years ago. Guess we'll wait and see.

These definately aren't about quality, more about saving space and saving money / easier setup.
They'll be able to put speakers and lights in places they were never able to before.

This will probably find its way into laptops nicely. I dont think the sound quality will be there for home use, though.

Considering the quality of most modern home stereos, I'm quite certain it will
