I have a Celeron 266 on an Aopen AX6L (review/info here: http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=144&p=1 ) in an old computer. One nice feature of the mobo is that it supports 1.5v - 3.5v and has a FSB setting of 83 in the BIOS. The mobo can handle up to a 8x multiplier.

I am wondering what would be a good (but relatively inexpensive) choice for a CPU for this board. If I could find one, I would get the 533 (8*66) slot 1 Celeron and the OC it to 667 (8*83). \

Can't seem to find one of these however so I'm looking at other options. Would a slot1 800E 'detuned' to 667 work?

Any other options you can think of. TIA.

The highest clocked slot1 Celeron was the 433. Anything faster than that was a ppga/flpga chip. However, you can run any 66 fsb Celeron (766 mhz was the highest) with a bios upgrade I imagine. The ppga chips were made up to 533 mhz and the ones between 533 and 766 were fcpga coppermine based chips.

I just looked at the bios revisions on aopen's site and it looks like your board doesn't have support for the fcpga Celeron 2 procs, just the ppga Celeron procs. You should be able to go up to a 533 Celeron. Be sure that it is a 533 and not a 533a proc as the 533a is based on the coppermine .18 micron process.

I have found a PPGA533 here: http://www.edgemicro.com/item.asp?CartId=650QSQZL20&ic=INTLCLRN533POEM&tpc=

However, I am confused about the adaptors for older CPUs and what I will need to put a 533 on the Aopen board. I am familiar w/ slot 1 PIIs and PIIIs but the 266 Celeron is different; it looks like a slot 1 PII w/o the plastic case around the chip and its board. What is this called? SEPP? Also, if I order the above chip, do I receive only the actual CPU or is it on a board to which I only need to add a HSF?

I really appreciate the advice.

If you buy an OEM Celeron 533 processor (like from that retailer in the link), it will be a naked chip with no heatsink or fan. So then you have to buy a cooler too. For that PPGA CPU to work in a slot one mobo, you'll need to buy a slotket too. Suddenly, you've spent probably $75 (if you include shipping) for obsolete components that won't overclock much anyway. You'd be very lucky to get a old style 533 to run at 75 FSB for a total of 600 MHz. Not worth it in my book. For $75 you can get a new retail Celeron 900 or 1 gig CPU that will overclock to at least 1.2 gig or more, plus it'll have a 3 year warranty and stock cooler.

If the mobo cannot support 100MHz and/or FCPGA, how would buying a Celery 900 help me for this system?

check around for a good ol BX board. The LX is pretty deficient in features. I was able to pick up a Shuttle Motherboard with a VIA chipset and a Celey 850 that oc'ed to 1.13ghz right out of the box and is rock stable for $99.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you should buy a Celly 900, was just using that as an example. Williams is probably right, dump that old mobo and get a better one.

I agree that a different mobo/CPU combo would be a better long range choice...just wanted to spice it up a bit.

I bought a used 500 Celly and HS for $20. I now need a slocket. Am planning to get the one from MWave http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/doc/A02080.html . I couldn't find the Asus slocket anywhere; is it still available?

you can probly get a slot1 to PPGA adapter from your local computer shop for about $15

since you won't be doing any heavy overclocking, if any, on the celey any slocket will be fine.
