View Full Version : Is this a cooling issue?

Over the holidays, I built two identical systems.....one for myself and another for the GF. I was at her place the other day and noticed that her machine ran a lot cooler than mine. Her CPU temp was rock steady at 31C, whereas mine hovers at around 42-43C. Her machine runs at 1.2 while mine is OC'd to 1.45GHz. I figured mine would run a little hotter but not that much hotter. I had been monitoring the temps on both machines with the Asus Probe software.

So, after reading about Motherboard Monitor, I decided to install it on my machine to see if there was a difference. My temps haven't changed. What's even more puzzling is that Asus Probe, MoBo Monitor, and the BIOS all read the same temps. I thought that maybe my HSF wasn't seated properly so I redid it (with Arctic Silver) and nothing happened, temps are still at 42-43C.

This weekend, I was at her place. When I came home today (afer work 3 days later), I fired up the machine and went straight into the BIOS. Here's what I found:

Motherboard temp: 24C
CPU temp: 37C

Is there anyway possible that the CPU temp could jump that high in the 5 secs or so it took for me to check it in the BIOS? Is Motherboard Monitor reading its temps directly from the BIOS or from Asus Probe? Should I uninstall Asus Probe and run Motherbaord Monitor alone and see if the numbers change? Could my overclock (default voltage, stock HSF) be causing the CPU temp to jump like that? What should I do to correct this problem (if indeed it is a problem)? Thanks.....

Well guessing you raised the vcore right?

When you overclock it will create heat obviously and it does seem right. And what HSF are you using?

Because if it is staying stock Intel hovers around 30-35 max at stock speeds.

I backed it down to 1200MHz at it's been holding at 41C for the last hour or so. I'm running the stock HSF and at default voltage (1.45v?). Is it possible for the temp to differ so much from the MoBo temp in such a short period of time? I've been running like this for well over a month with no probs. I'm going to throw a copper Vantec (6035 or something like that) in this weekend to replace the stock HSF that's in there now. I find it hard to believe that my CPU is 10* hotter than hers.....

the temp is measured with a thermister. Thermisters suk. they need to be calibrated to be useful and they aren't. I would guess the temps are close and the thermisters are different.

Just a guess tho. Swap the chips and see if there is a change in the readings.

What are your temps at load? (using a program like Prime95, Folding, Seti). It could have something to do with ambient temps. and the fact that you were overclocked. the load temps are the ones that matter so if you could find out it will help.
Hope this helps.
