Someone wants me to build them an ultra cheap computer and wondered how via processors are. I have absolutely no experience with via, but I have with cyrix, and they are total junk. So fire away!

Well according to Sandra a CyrixIII 667mhz is on par with a Pentium 200MMX and gets crushed by a Celly 266......not the best imho......your friend would be much happier with a Duron, or even a Celly.....heck a Pentium II would be better than any Cyrix currently out....

Wild Andy ran some pretty impressive benchmarks on it. It's not a gamer's chip, but a very good economy work station processor.
ack CYRIX disease. stay away. the P4 already caught it.

i read an article on the via chips awhile back. correct me if im wrong guys, and this is before these chips came out. only thing i remember though is it said they didnt eat much power. wish i knew where that article was...
dont think they said anything about performance since they werent out..

Not worth considering. The FPU runs at half the processor speed! The C5 might be a bit better though being able to compete with a pentium 4 at the same clock speed

They are very slow in floating point stuff. The are not that cheap you can get a duron for roughly the same price and it will rape it just about everything. The only advantage is that you can run with a heatsink this is not recomended but can be done. They will work perfectly fine just a heatsink and no fan. If you want a cheap computer then get a 1ghz duron and ecs k7s5a. You can put pc133 in it now and upgrade to DDR later. It comes with onboard nic and sound which is a big plus for a cheap computer.

It's a joke... Ebola's saying that Cyrix's are just plain bad processors and that the P4 is acting similar. I don't TOTALLY agree with his assessment (though sometimes it seems like it)... because of the RDRAM bandwidth the P4 uses that the Cyrix could never live up to... that and the Northwood P4 is a muuuuuuuuuucccccccccch better processor than any of the older ones... the older Willamette P4's aren't that good, that's the one I think he said had "Cyrix Disease".
...some people are just destined to own crap, hence, the VIA Cyrix III.
