View Full Version : need help w/ AMD tbird 1.4ghz....
Im having difficulty running my 1.4 tbird at full speed, and wont run stable at 1.4 ghz w/266mhz bus. I run prime95 and i only get errors when i have the bus speed set to 266 in bios, regardless of the CPU speed. I can run stable at 1300(100), but not 1333(133), or 1400(133) for that matter. Was wondering if anybody had any suggestions....
Some more info about your system would help. set it in the bios at 10.5 multiplier and 133 FSB. It was a little confusing in your post.

What PSU do you have and yes some more info would be useful.
....I am running an AMD Tbird 1.4, except i cant get it to run up to par. I am running it on a ABIT KG7-lite mobo w/ windows XP. Here are my current system parameters as they read in BIOS:
CPU Operating speed = 1200(133)
Multiplier factor=9
CPU FSB clock(mhz)=133
FSB Rate(CPU:sdram:PCI)=4:4:1
Speed error hold:disabled
Power Supply controler (default)
Vcore Voltage 1.750v
I/O voltage 3.50v
DDR vcc Voltage 2.65v
temp@idle=60c
The above setting will run stable, but as i said this is a 1.4 chip and it does not run stable when i test it @ 1.4 ghz w/266 fsb in prime95, and will cause my computer to crash randomly. I will post specs on my machine running @ 1.4 ghz, although they are not much different.
-thx

Your problem is HEAT... U say u run idle @ 60, imagine what its like at full load. What is the Heatsink fan & thermal paste u'r using? check if your heatsink is seated correctly. Heat is the main reason why CPUs die, we all in here try to keep out full load temps under 50C and if we can't, no more than 55! Again check out if u heatsink seated prolly. good luck
Heat seems like a logical explaination, and after i thought that i hadnt applied the correct amount of compound to my heatsink, i went out and got the radioshack brand and applied more of it. But it made very little difference.
My question is: will another fan in my machine solve the problem or different/more compound on my heatsink(or both)?
and:
is there a certain amount/technique to applying the thermal paste to your heatsink?
thx
*I am using a ball bearing fan on my heatsink(that came with my cpu)
also have a intake fan at the bottom of my case(mid-tower)

OK, are 150% sure urs HSF is properly seated? I still don't think that even w/ a retail HSF u'll get that hot... but I think that a better HSF would be great choice. Like millenium Glaciator II or Millenium G-Lite, or Thermalright SK-6 or something like this...
Im sure the heatsink fan is seated, but my heatsink is still cool enough to touch it without it being too hot. I made sure my heatsink compound was in contact with the processor evenly throughout the area. But your saying that i need a better HSF? How much do they cost, and where do i buy them from?
*by the way, i tried moving my intake fan from the bottom towards the processor(the top slot), but my agp slot(gforce) was in the way:confused: - so i ended up putting it a slot lower w/ the graphics card blocking the air flow. I am thinking about purchasing a small case fan to put as an outtake(or maybe intake? ) But need a fan thats powerful, yet quiet because of the noise problem im having already. If you could recomend a high quality case fan and a hsf, i would appreciate it, or any more suggestions....
thx
Welcome To The Forums
You need to cool that down before you fry it:eek: Do check that the thermal pad, stupid sticky stuff at the bottom of the HSF, has been totally romoved. I also suggest that you post this problem on our cooling forums so that you get more help & ideas for this:beer:
