Alright, I know the older XPs will pop right into a SMP board and run just like their $50+ more counterparts but before I plop down the $$$ I want to hear what ANYBODY has to say about using a pair of XP 2000+ chips with a dual socket A board. I'm not surely building one yet but I plan on it within the next few months.
Has anybody heard whether or not AMD will disable SMP on their XPs or if they have yet?
Which board in particular? MPX boards should work without a hinch but its uncomfirmed wether a MP board can do a 12.5 multiplier.

The only difference between an AthlonMP and an AthlonXP is the L1 bridges and how AMD tests them. MP's are "Certified by AMD for SMP operation". Some peeps have problems getting XP's to work in SMP but the vast majority work without problems. The only thing is that you don't get support or a warranty from AMD if you use AthlonXP's in SMP.

heh,
funny thing is that in a few cases amd recommened using xp's because they were retail where as there are no retail MP's
Still its unsure wether or not the MP boards can do a 12.5 multiplier. I wish someone would try to 2000 xp's in a tiger or thunder.

I was thinking of using the Tiger-MP board. I don't know much about Asus's MPX board but I want to see what the other big manufacturers (like ABIT and such) come out with soon, if any.
These L1 bridges....what is different about them in the MPs?

The L1 bridges on the MP's are like the L1's on TBirds and Durons - can be unlocked with a pencil, rather than having to fill those pits.
I've heard about more people having trouble with dual XP's on the TigerMP - it's an incredibly finicky board, especially with memory. I'd suggest the Asus A7M266D or waiting for another MPX board (Epox M762A should be out in a week or so).

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the info. Yeah, the Asus board looks pretty cool and the Epox sounds good too....I've heard the same about the Tiger. Is the PGA package for the MPs ceramic like the Tbirds?
Well, if somebody wants to send my an XP2000 I'll be happy to test it out on my TigerMP.
I know all about finicky motherboards, this goofy thing kept giving me NMI errors after putting in my Kyro II video card. I couldn't figure out what was the matter, and then I DOWNGRADED my PSU from an Enermax 430w to the stock Antec 300w on a whim and no problems. The funny thing is that the Antec puts out LESS voltage on the 5v line (4.6vs4.7) and it's more stable.
I have no idea why it works...
