View Full Version : Problems w/ SMP client w/ Win7
Does it work at all with windows 7? I cannot get it to work, get some SOCK_POST_CONNECT error everytime I try to run the install.
Does anything F@H work w/ Win7 or am I just out of luck unless I dual boot?
I read some posts with problems, but my impression was yes, it worked.
Alas, I don't have Win7 to give it a try.
Let me check the Stanford forum and see what they have on it.
Just to check:
You are signed in to an administrative account with full administrative rights and are signed in with a password for that account?
Edit: There is a thread with nothing but Windows7 accounts of folding. Aside from some driver uncertainty with GPU cards, they are successfully folding with both SMP and GPU fah clients:
http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=7846&p=89625&hilit=Windows7#p89625
There are four pages to the thread, and I just read the first page.
In Control Panel >> System >> Hardware tab >> Device manager button, do you have any yellow question marks showing other than things you don't use?
I wonder if you don't have an underlying problem with the OS.
Yes, I am on the administrative account and I do have a PW set and its NOT set to auto-logon (I must type in the pw when I start windows).
:(
Do all your devices show up properly recognized in Device Manager?
Do you have a firewall turned on?
Is mpiexec and smp and fah's executable, not listed in your exclusion table?
So your firewall says "you ain't getting to my sockets!" ?
Only firewall is the windows default. I turned that off and had the same problem. All devices in DM are fine, nothing is missing or disabled (or conflicted). Getting late, I gotta be up in 5 hours. I will give it another shot tomorrow and see if I can get it I guess.
I have 2 with win7 64 and both wont run the smp client but the 32 bit runs it just fine.
Is there a 32 bit and a 64 bit version of Windows7?
Dejo, were you trying to run the MPICH client, or the DEINO SMP client. Did you get the same error that Doz reported getting?
We could *really* use your help in the CC race, if you get a chance.
I'm running Win7 (7000) x64 and have no problems with the GPU systray client. (Also have no problems with my VMs...)
I imagine this problem with the SMP installer has to do with getting the mpi framework to install correctly...
You using MPICH or Deino? (Woops, didn't say that Adak already asked that...)
I can run the systray client on either 32 or 64 but only good for about 900ppd, the mpci whatever client wont run on either of my i7 computers in 64bit win7 but will run on the 32 win7. the 32 win7 will earn about 4000ppd with a single client running at 3.2g.
Im using the MPICH client. I guess Ill goto the tray ;/
Well, if you're really serious about getting good points out of your rigs then I'd suggest going for VMs. Notfred's VM appliance is really easy to set up (probably easier than the MPICH or Deino client, really,) and gains WAY more points.

@dejo
Try installing the client in "C:\users\|your username|\FAH" and run install.bat by going into start-accessories-then right click Command Prompt and run as Admin. Then type "cd C:\users\|your username|\FAH" press enter then "install.bat" enter, follow instructions on screen. When that is done create a shortcut of the Client and add the -smp.
After this it should work, this is because Windows 7 doesn't let things run from Program Files without proper permissions, therefore installing it into your User directory bypasses this.
: click on accept when UAC asks for permission
If this doesnt work for you the would suggest to use Notfreds VM Appliance
Notfred's VM Player is the way to go. Running it here on W7 64 Bit RC!
Currently running Win7 64bit on an I7 w/hyperthreading enabled w/ 4 notfred's VM (getting 9,650 ppd on the CPU alone!) I could break 10k EZ if I overclocked a bit more.
