I just reattached my glaciator today after replacing the foam feet on my cpu with some JB weld. Plugged everything in, turned on the computer, and heard a grinding metal noise. I immediately shut off the computer, pulled the hsf, and checked it out. Somehow, the fan popped out a bit and was rubbing on the fan guard. I pulled the guard and bent it out so they aren't rubbing any more and tried everything out again. Now my fan doesn't work at all. Anyone know how to fix this or is my fan dead?

Lucky for me, my roommate burnt his cpu last week, so I'm using his glaciator right now.

Is it a ball bearing or sleeve fan?

I've tried to fix fans before and have had no luck with them. If it has popped out i dont think you can do anything with it but toss it and buy a new one.

You are better off to just buy a new one.

Since yours is junk you might as well take it appart and learn about them. Remove the sticker and under it is a little hole. In the hole is usually a little ring around a post. Pry the ring out and you should be able to pull the fan appart.

Oy, the fan was a pain in the butt to pull out. The heatsink is welded around it, so I had to take off the grill and yank on it for quite a while before the glue that kept it on the heatsink gave away.

Anyways, it's a ball bearing fan.

OMG! I just tried plugging the bare fan into the MB and it worked! Now to figure out how to get it to function inside the heatsink...

I wouldnt trust that fan on your cpu even if it does work Krusty. I would just get a new one of i were you. You wouldnt want the fan to suddenly stop when you leave for the bathroom, come back and find smoke coming from your comp. my 2 cents

That's what is good about this whole thing. The reason I took off the hsf was to put on some JB weld so I could better support the water block that will soon be going on there. Just tested out my pump today too and it kicks butt!

So I don't really have to trust it. I'll just keep it as a backup hsf. Also, I found out where it came apart that might have caused it to stop working. The board the coils are attached to had lifted off the base of the fan. A little adhesive is setting those parts together as I am writing this. It should be all good and more than good enough to work as a backup hsf.
