View Full Version : [Project] Blood Omen
So, its time to slowly start updating to i7 methinks. I have a few watercooled systems under my belt now, and figured I'd try to take my next one to the next level.
Its going to start with my current build going into the new case, but eventually I will update the cpu, mobo and memory, as well as possibly adding an SSD.
The planned set of final components:
i7 920 (D0)
6GB DDR3 1600 or 1800
Foxconn Bloodrage OR EVGA X58 Classified (non nf200)
So.. to start you off, here's a teaser:
I wonder what the color scheme is >=) Powder coating should be done on all the internals and the side panels today. I've also got some goodies coming in the mail. Most of it will get here this afternoon, some will probably be tomorrow.

ooh im excited about this one.
if you can spring for the extra cash on more than 1 ssd , DO it. raid SSD for C: makes your system feel like it went from driving a car to flying a plane.
AND
heat and noise are so much lower . (im hoping your going to go the low noise route)
I'm going to try for low noise lol :D both of my packages were delivered will update when I can (may not be till tomorrow morning, but I will update :D)
*EDIT* Update(s) :D
Scythe kama Bay, I'll be switching out the 800rpm fan included with my own 1200 rpm scythe. And Red CCFL's. I haven't decided whether I'll use one or both yet.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/Compooter/DSCN0362.jpg
Here are the real goodies. 8.5ft Feser UV red tubing, SST Aero Slots, 3mm and 5mm LED's (non tailed, red) to replace the front panel led's with. Turns out I needed 5mm, 3mm is TINY. And the big daddy of it all =) XSPC RX360 and 3 Yate Loon mediums. (Strangely enough two of the 3 are closed corner and have stickers on both sides. One of them is open corner and only has a sticker on one side.)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/Compooter/DSCN0363.jpg
And now for the best part so far! The powdercoating!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/Compooter/DSCN0364.jpg
As you can see, all of the internals are absolutely gorgeous in that mirror black.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/Compooter/DSCN0365.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/Compooter/DSCN0366.jpg
And the side panels are even better! He tried to take most of the finish off of the sides, and the red he used is fairly translucent, so it created this awesome cloudy effect. he offered to re-do it, but I really like the way that turned out.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/Compooter/DSCN0368.jpg
He also did most of the screws that were visible. I forgot to take a few, so I'm saving the powder coated thumbscrews for the internal expansion slots. Ohh and yes, that is a late 1960's Gibson SG.
So... you've seen what the case guts look like all by their lonesomes, but how about all put together?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/Compooter/DSCN0369.jpg
I love the window on this case. Its so clear and pristine (and i'm pretty sure there's already cat hair on it..:bang head

neat, it looks very spacey. did he have metal flakes in the paint?
I believe there were metal flakes in the red powder. They aren't quite as pronounced without the flash. It's a nice day out, so I will try to get the case outside for some non-flash pics so you can get a good feeling of what it really looks like

great job !
I've barely done anything >.< the powdercoating is all thanks to my new buddy Steve from Wayland.. I'll start work on the internals and the loop and such tonight, hopefully have the whole thing up and running tomorrow or sunday. And then its just saving up for the rest of the components. (well.. new guitar, and then the rest of the components)

lookin gooood.
sort of pleasant if your looking in its direction.... but not a mobile disco.
tastefully well done :D
Thanks =)
Here are some "completed" pics now. (Of course, I'm still going to be upgrading the mobo, cpu and ram later on)
This was taken shortly after leak testing was done: (Notice I forgot to put the memory back in >.< Turned the power on, only to be met with a very unpleasant beep (Doh!). I then had to attempt to explain why it beeped to my gf, who coincidentally was on the phone with me at the time.)

Keep in mind this was my first attempt in sleeving. I had done everything but my pump and fans before switching into this case.
One light shot at the front of the case:

The obligatory night shot:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/DSCN0386.jpg
and one more, so that you can see the LED's in the front of the case. And a note for anybody who wants to try to switch out LED's on this front panel... BE CAREFUL, the PCB is rather cheap and easy to ruin the traces on.

Sorry for the massive lack of updates over the last few months, but here's a quick one:
I have a Foxconn Bloodrage and OCZ DDR3 1600 6gb kit on the way from CorpseJockey.
That means all I need is the i7 920 to complete the picture.
I've got an email in to the MurderMod guys with some questions about a particular sleeving size. More on that in the next few updates as parts/new tubing comes in.
I'm not going to mess with using my lga 775 mount for the GTZ on the bloodrage, since the 1366 kit is only $10.

Hi, got any well lighted pics of the side panels?... (I sometimes take pics outside to help with this). I'm really curious to see that red in more detail.
Nice build, by the way.

I like that idea too...
show us your spangly blood red side panels
depends if your camera can focus on it as well really.... good if you can anyhow.
I will try to get a side panel outside today, to get that pic for you guys. I will have it online no later than tomorrow afternoon.

Whoa there!... almost got cross-eyed looking at that close up shot. :)
That paint looks the the three-stage velocity red I have on my RX8. Nice. :)
Just heard back from Charlie @ Murdermod, and it was a no go on my color for my sleeving idea.
I wanted to get the larger size sleeving to sleeve my tubing with. I think I have enough of the larger size left over in black to do it with, but I wanted to see if I could get a darker red for it. No such luck :(
Oh well, will still look awesome with the tubing sleeved black. (not to mention the anti-microbial benefits of shielding the tubing from light :D)
I have not decided if my loop will stay as is yet. I am thinking about moving the pump underneath the divider into the bottom compartment. IIRC the reason I didn't before is that with the res top on it it was a bit too tall, but I will have to take a look again, because I'm really not sure.
Oo.. and when I open up my waterblock to clean it I will take pictures so we can all see how bad it's gotten since I last cleaned it.

likin that feature red action anyhow... nice paint.
got me thinking about the light and crudlies now.
not sure it makes a difference if there light getting in somewhere anyhow e.g. res.
and crudlies tend to expoloit all situation (some may like it dark )
still nothing that not getting the wrong stuff in there in the first place and the old silver bullet wont cure.
#Chuckles# Dont suppose your dedicated enough to weave your own blood red sleeves :D
If I had any talent in the area you know I would lol..
but the black should look very nice lit by the red cathode. :D
and btw, its Distilled Water and PT Nuke all the way. :D I used a black dye bomb with the last loop to try and get a darker red out of my tubing, which worked, but I wanna switch it up this time.

yep black sleeves works for me #Chuckles#
already looks like emergency backup lighting from thoes photos :D
not sure about mine... turn the fan controller up and men in leather start to turn up at the door with bottles of martini... #Laughs# getting a sign made up `this is not the blue oyster bar!` #Chuckles#
Okees so I got goodies in the mail today (courtesy of our very own CorpseJockey)
I'm expecting more goodies in the mail tomorrow, so I'll post a larger update with everything in it then. Also, I have a D0 stepping i7 920 on the way that should arrive at some point next week >=)
:eek: My i7 920 is being shipped to the wrong address!!:eek:
Fedex has already picked it up.. I've put in an email to the seller, so hopefully I can get that corrected before its actually on its way.

Tubing, compression fittings, 1366 hold down for my GTZ and 1 package of Indigo Extreme.
The right angle compression fittings aren't going to work, the threaded collar is too small for my tubing. (1/2"ID and 5/8"OD on the fitting, tubing is actually 1/2" ID and 3/4" OD) I might just use them as regular barbs and clamp with a worm drive clamp, if I need the right angles after I figure out the layout for the new loop.
I was able to get in touch with the seller and the i7 920 is now on its way to the correct address, should be here early next week.

curious to see the result more than I fear the risk of toasted cpu myself.
curious to see the result more than I fear the risk of toasted cpu myself.
+1
Apparently the CPU won't physically allow itself to top TJMAX at 100C, according to the installation instructions included with the interface. I'm not too worried about it honestly, as it really only needs to be up there for a few seconds (10 to 15 at most, the reviewer at XS let it run for 10 minutes without a pump and no damage)
So, as long as the built in thermal protection doesn't fail me I should be ok. :screwy:
*Edit* Maybe I should contact the Enerdyne guys and see if they'll cover any damage caused by the Indigo Extreme first...
*Edit 2* The ETI's instructions state that on watercooling it will spike almost immediately to 100C and then back down a bit, closer to 90c, and once it stabilizes there (after a few seconds) you turn the pump back on and let it cool off before you turn the PC back upright, as your CPU block is essentially now sitting on a "puddle" of molten metal in between it and the CPU's IHS
BobbyBubblehead

thermal protection has never failed on any machine ive come across in over a decade.
friend of mine (network engineer these days) once fired an amd cpu up with no heatsink on it by accident and it still lived on.
and ive had a go before with not clipping the heatsink on properly so theres virtually no contact.
and had a couple of pumps stop and the molex pop off a couple of times in the past year.
Well, that thermal protection is what the Indigo Extreme relies on :D
*EDIT 9/20*
Looks like my cpu is already at the nearest FedEx facility, so it may in fact be delivered tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me :D
CPU was delivered yesterday, got my loop together last night, tubing sleeved and the loop tested.
Today the PC went together, and I experimented a bit. I'll probably install the IE tomorrow or Friday.
A few minutes of tweaking (literally 5-10 minutes before stress testing) I was in windows with a stable OC of 4ghz (21x190) with memory at 1554 8-8-8-24-1T
Temperatures are a lot higher than I'm used to on water, but better than they would be on air. Max that I'm seeing is 70C, at 1.376v
Shattered my previous 3DMark 06 best, (20030) by nearly 4000 points, at 23968.
Also bested my 3DMark Vantage scores (although my CPU was listed as "Missing CPU")

lol Damir, I'll post up a pic of my new guitar =)
Anyways, I don't have any pics of the finished product just yet, still working on my VGA wiring... it doesn't look bad but I think it could definitely look better.
Heres all what my waterblock looked like after I opened it up.

Here's the CPU

Here's the main rig doing leak testing:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/Muleltman/DSCN0410.jpg
Notice the lack of my planned compression fittings.. The right angle fittings I bought, the collar is way too small for 3/4" OD tubing, so I used those with worm drive clamps.
For the other tubing the collar wouldn't fit over the sleeving and heat shrink, so back to the worm drive clamps there as well.
Overall I think it looks pretty at home within my case. Flashy, yet understated :D
I will try to get some pics of the completed build later tonight.

is this it then?
can we soon see your heatsink solderd to your cpu and de-solderd socket? (worse case senario #Laughs#)
or maybe it`ll be boring and just work
Nope this isn't it, we're close though.
I'm gonna get the Indigo Extreme on there tonight, hopefully. If they solder together I will both revel in my incredibly awesome thermal transfer and curse you for jinxing the process bobby.
That's not gonna happen though. I never topped 70C with my OCZ Freeze compound, so we should see mid 60's with the Indigo Extreme. I'll do an hour of OCCT, and have it generate temp graphs so you can easily see any differences.
So far I'm very happy with temps. They're a lot higher than I've seen on my C2Q but I was expecting that :D
(4ghz with HT on at 1.375v around 70C max on LinX load is nothing to shake a stick at)
BobbyBubblehead
09-24-09, 09:44 AM
it`ll be fine! :D
(could you un-curse me... dont need the hex im flying in a few days #Laughs# be thinking of you if I get a migrating duck in engine two )
Nerves of steel hard science fact and big wallet... you should be fine
Thats better!
Consider your self un-cursed lol.
I will let you all know what happens tonight, I will try to get it posted tonight, but I may not get it until tomorrow.
On second thought, I don't need a full hour of OCCT, I'll do half an hour, then change thermal interfaces and once I do the reflow procedure for the IE I will do another half hour and post results.
--Wish me luck! I hope I get the installation right the first time.... >.<
BobbyBubblehead
09-24-09, 01:06 PM
cool I was hopping for a pretty graph or two, pre & post OCCT
(pleased were allright ;) I was lookin all over the house for a parachute and duck whistle)
Edit: Oh and Good Look
(may my clocking deities jebus and alan be with you)
Well.. installation went pretty smoothly. Took me about 15 minutes to get the thing on there. I apologize that I don't have the graphs with me at the moment, I need to run a full 30 minute test later tonight.
Temps overall do seem to be better, on Core 1 it doesn't seem to have changed much over the OCZ Freeze, maybe 1-2C at most. I almost need to overlay the graphs to be able to see the difference.. but on core 4 it seems to have dropped as much as 5C, with cores 2 and 3 at 2 to 3C cooler it seems.
Anyways, while I had the PC on its side I did notice that there was some air still hanging out in my loop! >.<
I let it run for a bit overnight so hopefully it's worked its way out of the loop now. So I will run the test again later tonight and then hopefully get everything uploaded.
