I'm really frustrated watching my system taking Ø 18 hours for finishing one Seti package. I just finished around 10 packages and even for the fastest one, 12 hours were needed. Why is it that f***ing slow ? Normally I'd guess that it must be some faster, because some friends using tiny stuff as Athlon 1 Ghz or P III 800 Mhz got amazing better results in time.
My system:
Celeron T 1200@1635Mhz, 256MB MCI SDRAM CAS 2/2/2
Sandra Scores CPU: 4565/2176, Multimedia: 8897/11044
Any ideas ?
Profanity is not permitted here..
Are you using the version directly from Seti@home's website where it shows the processing with all the bars and such also known as the "GUI version" ?
If so you should dump that thing straight off the bat and use the Commandline Version w/ SetiSpy and Driver.
Here's a link how to set it up:
Seti CLC, SetiSpy, and Seti Driver (]http://www.ocsetiteam.com/Instr1.htm)

Make sure that in power management that your hard drive is set to never shut off
Even if he uses the GUI, it shouldn't be that slow for a 1.6+ Ghz system. My Athlon at 1.65 Ghz used to average around 4-5 WU/hr when I was using GUI. I've since switched to CLC and I only shave 25-40 minutes off. Something isn't right.
riscracer,
It is possible to overclock your CPU so high that it actually degrade the performance. 1.63 Ghz for a 1.2 Ghz Celeron is rather a big OC. Although I've never run into it with a CPU OC, I have had instances where if I oc my video card too high, I would get horrible frame rates in games.

Well, I don't know about faster systems, but if he has the GUI set to run with the graphics on as the screen saver, then I think it would do it. Of course, he could also have it set to only run as a screen saver... That would definatly do it...

First check the version of the client you are running. If you are running the screensaver then dump it and install the clc following the instructions found in the OC SETI Team web page.
Second check that you have the virtual memory (swap file) setted to a fixed size and moved to the start of your HD.....all this can be done with Symantec's Norton Speeddisk.
Great overclock, at 12*136 you shgould have no problems with your hardware, I think this is a software realted slowdown.

I have the graphical client, diabled the screendaver and run it as 'analysis always runs' and keep her minimized in the system tray. It takes between 8 to 10 hours to finish a workload (Celeron 800 OCed to 132Mhz FSB, 1056Mhz) under Win2k. However I noticed SETI runs MUCH slower when I Ghost to WinXPpro using the same settings...

as you mentioned I got the GUI version (3.03). The settings are that it's normally minimized and does always run. 80% of time it's the only executable program I run. My virtual memory is fixed to 384 MB. I did now deinstall the version of Seti I had and loaded a new one, which is of same type either, but it hasn't become any faster. So I guess, it isn't a problem of the version.
What I really don't know is, why this CPU can't show it's full power in running that program, while it perfectly does in all others, allowing up to 120 fps in UT, 7480 3dMarks2001 and great results in Sandra Benchmarks as seen below.
How do you know its not faster?
The Commandline version goes up and down with them and after maybe hours it will give you the correct time.
Your swap file should be 2-2.5 bigger if you have 128-384ram and if you have 512+ don't set none.
