I'v had a P2 300 for some time now as it was in my parents computer before the mobo died and then they got an upgrade. Anyway, I recently read on this forum that some of the early P2's were unlocked, so I tried mine and guess what!! ITS UNLOCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D w00t! hehe
I am so happy now! Pushed it up to 350. Its running in a crappy PC Chips m726 mobo. Having problems getting windows to install. Can't o/c the fsb. I guess I'm lucky that the mobo even lets me change the jumpers to 3.5 x 100.
Anyway, its great! Isn't only around 20% of the P2's unlocked?

Congrats on finding it was unlocked. 20% is just a number because there were alot of chips beginning to be locked from 233 then well 300 was months away so it had to be more of a sucess to lock it.

But that doesn't matter good job try for more :D

Congrats, not many P-II 300 CPUs were unlocked, you have a rare find indeed. Sounds like you are still a bit unstable yet though. Probably need better cooling and a tiny boast in voltage. If your mobo has no manual voltage settings, then the best you can hope for is better cooling. Most of those old P-II never used any type of heat pad or thermal paste between the CPU core and heatsink. Heck, some of those old P-II CPU never even had a fan on the heatsink.

There are several low budget things you can do to improve cooling. First is to install an extra case fan or two. An intake fan in front and an exhaust fan in back really helps case flow. If you have extra unused power supplies sitting around, rob the 80mm fans out of them for case fans. Next, carefully remove the heatsink. Lapping the heatsink and reinstalling it with a good thermal paste should drop temps by several degrees. Another thing you can do is install a higher output fan on the heatsink. Those old 50mm fans used on those things were very wimpy. There is usually room on those heatsinks to mount two 50mm fans. Double the air flow...cool. Good luck and have fun.

its a good rule not to install OS with your CPU overclocked even if u think its 100% stable

Ebay is loaded with slot-1 sinks for about $1 each. I just picked up a new glacier2 with copper bottom for $7.50 total. For $5 you could probally get a used slot-1 sink that could hold you at 350.

Thanks for the advice guys! Yeah, I've already got the extra case cooling ready. Only need to get good case fans( currently using old power supply fans ). Already taken off the heatsink and used some thermal paste( using the cheaper radio shack paste ). Cooled it a bit but I think I'll get a much better heatsink/fan for it. Would go higher but the motherboard is realy poor. I've read reviews of the mobo and some people say that its the worst peace of junk ever invented for a computer. Oh well, I'll see if I can get it running good.
Thanks again. :D :D

Actually, my cousin has an unlocked P3-733 Slot 1. He wouldn't want to overclock it tho. That's just too bad.

it is a terrible thing to waste...:( an unlucked PIII?! man o man..ask him if he will trade with my newly aquired 750..:D i want to play with a "unlucked" PIII so bad

Thats a shame. Try and do what tainice said. Swap him for another cpu. I think that it would even be worth swapping him for an 800 or even 850. It is a grand find and would be worth a lot if he wanted to sell it. Anyway, if I were you, I'd be trying to swap it... :D

I'd advise to find a good BX board for that...one with multiplier controls down as low as they go.....

Then drop that sucka down to like 2.5 and hit the FSB at 140! That'd give you 350! If, of course, you have an AGP card that can take it! Fun, fun, fun!

I worked at 3M for awhile....they had several old Hewlett Packard Vectra PII 233 machines laying around. They were being circulated out while I was working there, and I was just getting into the whole OC scene. I also found out that a)really old PIIs were unlocked and b)these Vectras had multiplier contols by DIP switch! w00t!! I couldn't believe it - these things would hit 300 easy, no voltage mods! I even sent a couple back into curculation while overclocked...so a couple people working for 3M's HR or IT, unbeknownst to them, has an OCed PII! Hahaha! The Rat strikes again!

OMG it's late.

Wow...I looked that mobo up on PCChips' website. Old school! It's not even an ATX motherboard? Looks like BabyAT to me! And what the heck kinda chipset is that? A PC100 BXcel? I'm very confused....is this a BX ripoff? Check it out, people...what is this thing?

Hmm...well, if that's all you can get ahold of for now, good luck to ya'!
And have fun with your new setup!

I'l see what I can do about swapping out that unlocked p3 - 733,, I took My p3-700 to a gig, but remember the 733 already has a 133mhz fsb, so I dunno if the 733 would beat a gig! It's a Slot 1 btw.

Yes, I told you all that this mobo is realy bad. Been giving me a headach for weeks now    Anyway, now that I know that I have something special, I think I'm going to spend some money and get a fairly good mobo for it. It would be a waste to leave the unlocked cpu below its potential...

Good point, Very True!

audiman:

the point is much mhz you can get out of this babe..simply because it is an "unlocked" PIII is reason enough to swap it.:) and since you can freely paly around the multiper, just tune up it up higher, so you can reach 1gh or whatever without high fsb. just 2 c
