"It starts up fine", what do you mean? How far does it get?

it gets to the bar screen, it has the ubuntu logo, and a loading bar underneath. right after that, the screen goes blackish blue and stays like that, and the cd/dvd drive stops spinning all together. im using the install disk that i got from ubuntu, not a burned copy i downloaded.

I have encountered a problem like this called the "quiet splash bug" although I haven't had this since 8.04 I thought they had fixed it.
The solution that worked for me was to turn off graphical boot (i.e. watch words fly by instead of the scrolling bar)
to do this enter the grub menu (if you only have ubuntu installed you will have to hit esc to get to the menu)
Hit `e` to enter the edit mode then scroll to the end and look for
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro quiet splash
and change it to
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro
of course your root=/dev/whatever is going to be specific to your computer but you get the idea

I am by no means knowledgable in Ubuntu, but I saw this exact behavior after a hard reset. I did not try turning off graphical boot, and ended up having to reload the OS.
I learned the reset button is not to be used with Ubuntu!

this key combination does not work any more. They changed it with the new xorg
Thanks to EnablingWolf for this
Right Alt Key + PrntScrn + K
(PrntScrn also may be named SysRq)

get the alt install disc , when you get installed, update your graphics drivers asap. worked for me had a similar issue except my screen was white
I also had this problem. The only way to fix it was to get the alternate install and do a non-graphical install. Once the system is installed just install the GPU drivers. I personally have Nvidia (sig rig) and I just go on another computer with a flash drive, downloaded the driver and installed it from a command line.

i had the same problem trying to install ubuntu
found out ubuntu does not like ide/sata modes on some motherboards
try installing ubuntu using the AHCI setting in the bios
my install went smoothly after that
i was using the badaxe mobo

Don't forget to check the disk for errors.
