I tried doing a search so forgive me if this has been asked a million times. My friend and I are looking for a good first person shooter we can play online together but I've been out of the computer game for about a year so I don't know whats good and whats come out lately. We want something thats really popular for online play that way we will easily be able to play with other people. The last game I really demo'ed was Crysis, and I thought it sick. Dont know how the online play is, but if anyone has some suggestions that would be awesome. Thanks.

Was already answered a million times above but I'll post anyway: L4D, TF2, UT3 for FPS.
Also try some Savage 2 if you like competitive games.
FPS wise, I enjoyed Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat (mod) more than any other game. It also actually takes skill, unlike a certain sequel. A decent sized community still plays.

i play Cod4 multiplayer the most, out of all teh online games i play.
also play Fear Combat (because it's free)
My vote goes for left 4 dead and tf2. If you want a war game i'd say cod 4 (cod 5 is horrible compared to it imo). Or counter strike source i guess but i can't stand to even look at that game anymore.

Yep! The new assault mode that came with Northern Strike was fantastic as well, 64 player Port Bavaria was a blast!
The quality of team play you got with squads, the commander and team mates in general on pubs is something I've never experienced before or since, it was fantastic. The game truly requires teamwork!
I'd like to see a full Battlefield game based 3 years after Northern Strike running on CryEngine 3. Yes, I dare to dream

That would be the greatest game ever made. Does 2142 still have a following? I might reinstall it if it does.

I have COD4&5, Crysis, Orange Box, DOD Source, BF2, and other more modern FPS's but oddly enough, the ones I like most and play most are free ones like OpenArena, Wolfenstein:ET, ETQW (free for me), Quake Online, and a few other ones. Disregarding the aged graphics, I love that they're developed for the love of the game and not necessarily the love of money or fame. Also, no signing in to an account (disregarding Quake Online), no waiting for long boot times, and there's still a good player base for those being free and OS independant. Also, I love fast/twitchy FPS's.

I can't believe the amount of people who rank TF2 as one of the best FPS out there. I just downloaded it because it is a free weekend and OMG, this game is horrible! It's like playing sponge bob, I prefer playing SOFII which is about 10 years old now and it's light years ahead of TF2. I just don't see what all the hype is, the game is weak!

Yeah, still a lot of servers and people playing. I just re-installed 2142 last night, I play BF2 all the time and that still has a pretty big following also. Does anyone play Crysis multiplayer, how is it? I'm looking to play something new.

I did too. They have a few more new maps and a new game mode since I last played it. Only about 175ish servers though. I wonder if Northern Strike has a bigger following.

the "Best" always changes, there's never really a true best. WoW is the most popular but that doesn't mean it's great. The Halo Trial is still the most played online game demo because those kids can't afford Halo or can't get any lawn mowing allowance (cheapskates) and that's a horrible game to play but it gets the greatest acclaims by the press ever.
By year, i've observed different 'bests'. Green indicates a stable popularity that retains today:
1993 - VGA Planets
1994 - Legend of the Red Dragon (BBS door game)
1995 - Doom II
1996 - Subspace
1997 - Quakeworld
1998 - Quake 2
1999 - Starsiege: Tribes
2000 - Half-Life (especially Counter-Strike)
2001 - ^
2002 - ^
2003 - Battlefield 1942
2004 - Call of Duty
2005 - ^
2006 - Battlefield 2
2007 - Call of Duty 4
2008 - ^
2009 - Call of Duty: World at War
I don't like this rifle war game trend of late.

gotta agree with everyone else here. tf2, l4d, and css. if you are into DM games than go for quake live.

Maybe I am, but this list isn't an 'honorable mentions' list. It's the general public thinking best list. Q3 and UT2004 are good games though they never held up against CS or BF games.

I would have to say the all time greatest was Planetside before the made it suck.
SOF2 was one of the most populated games on gamespy when it came out. Definitely underrated. If it had more players I'd still be playing it.

Team Fortress 2. Hands down, in my humble opinion.
Here's my take on it, sorry it's a bit long wnided, that's me! lol
I'm old school and have been playing MP FPS games since Duke Nukem 3D when it was just me and my friend hooking up over 56k baud or whatever it was back then.
I bought the Orange Box about 2 years ago after a break from gaming. I wasn't at all interested in playing TF2 at that time, but loved the new style of graphics. So I played HL2, and Portal then uninstalled from Steam. Never looked back.
I bought Left4Dead when it came out and loved it! After a long drought from MP FPS games (CS, not CS:S, being the last thing I played) it recaptured what I was missing.
Left4Dead is a lot of fun. But 4 on 4 is VERY personal and so it's a more intense multiplayer experience. So when you play with someone new, or not as good, it's frustrating, especially when they quit. Also, Left4Dead gets boring as Survivor. Same old guns, same old maps... same old strategies over, and over. This is why Special Infected is so much fun - hunter, smoker, etc. have their own skills. I wish each survivor had its own skill, or something, instead of the same guns.
This is why I love TF2 so much. When you get bored of a class, you switch and that keeps it fresh. Plus LOTS of awesome maps. AND, the experience is more relaxed FOR ME. I play on 24/32 player servers, so having that many people, when n00bs play, it's not so bad, you can compensate. And I love the different game styles. And the classes are just awesome. Awesome awesome awesome!
All I can say is i love this freaking game so much I'm now addicted, saying up to midnight, even 2 am when I have to get up for work at 6. lol
Just love the game. I don't need to play anything else, ever.
What I do need is time to learn how to effectively play Spy and Scout!
Oops, forgot to say why I ended up reinstalling TF2 to begin with. So I got bored of Left4Dead and have been reading about TF2 updates and it all sounded enticing, and since I'm back into MP games I decided to check it out, and that was like a couple weeks ago.
I just love the freaking game. I know the novelty will wear off, but I can't see myself going back to left4dead and pigeonholed into a few guns and a few maps.

Some people aren't really into the 'american cartoon' style, me being one of them, so in a way I kind of see what you mean. It also depends on how much you value gameplay over art style and other stuff. I'd just play something else if the style isn't to my liking, but then again I've played many games where I thought the art was 'kiddy' because the gameplay was fun (ex.: WoW, til it got too casualized).
@ all of you people that still haven't played Savage 2 ... You're missing out on a lot. :/

Left 4 Dead is the best game to play "with a friend", you absolutely need someone to watch your back. For a straightforward FPS I'd also recommend Team Fortress 2 & Call of Duty 4, they're both masterpieces of the genre.

What, they're online, and more than one person plays.. they qualify.

I need to check out TF2 with all the new updates.

Most of my friends love playing Special Force and Counter-Strike PLDT play. It's the best multiplayer for us because of the thrill and the actions are great and very challenging in terms of skills and tactics.
