I just got my new setup with an XP1800 processor, and I was wondering what the idle temperature for one of these processors should be. Mine's running 104F in the BIOS with the retail heatsink and fan.

Welcome to the fourms

104°F thats what around 36°C?

most people would really sugest getting rid of the thermal pad and getting some thermal proxy even the stuff from radio shack would do it.

but that temp is good for retail hs/f what is it fully loaded?

I don't know how to check load temperatures, anyone recommend anything, a program or something?

I'm fairly new here so I'm not sure how much advice you'd want to take from me, but if I think I know I might as well toss out an answer! I used the distributed.net client that can be downloaded from here:

http://http.distributed.net/pub/dcti/current-client/dnetc-win32-x86.zip

Just extract the .exe tool, run it, "register" with an email address of some sort and then start it up. It'll max out the cpu immediately. I ran it for 10 minutes and experienced a max within the first minute and a half.

I run 44-46 idle and 51-53 loaded...which is why I'm changing to a better heatsink and installing more fans. Just can't bring myself to go aqua when I can get suitable from a better heatsink and fans...

Hopefully this helps,

Nick

104F is 40C. That is what my XP1600 is at right now running at 1.58 with 1.8v using an Alpha 8045, Lian-Li case and 6 system fans. I'd say your 104 is about right for a non-overclocked CPU. Mine gets up to 45-46 after running 3DMark2001 a few times in a row. It comes back down to 40 within seconds of closing 3DMark though.
