Hey guys, I built a cheap0 computer for my older brother.
He's had it for a lil' over a year now.
It was a Matsonic 7112c MB
Slot 1 Pentium 3 800eb CPU
256mb of ram
8mb agp card
NIC
Modem
20gb HD
new CDRW
cdrom
zip 100 int.
floppy drive
300w atx PS

Well anyway he tried to power on the system, and it blew the power supply (nasty smell)

so he unplugged everything and brought it over

Then I went to CompUSA (eww i know, but i need to get this up asap!!) to get a power supply.... I picked up their 250w atx, the 300w was $39.99 +s/h.
I pop in the new PS and try to boot....... no boot, no post beep.
So I take the computer to my apartment and start to test the parts...
The parts I know are bad;
20gb Maxtor HD
8mb Sis AGP video card.
new CDRW drive

I have been able to test everything but the CPU/RAM
besides hooking stuff back up to it.

To test the MB/CPU I installed the CPU, 256mb of ram, a 32mb AGP TNT2 video card, and a floppy drive.
Then booted up..... no post, no beeps
Re-seated the parts, and tried with a cdrom drive, I got the same thing. I could hit the eject on the cdrom drive and it would open and close.
So then I started to remove parts and try to boot, to see if I could get any beeps.
I am down to JUST THE CPU/MB and I still don't get any beeps.
I can see a red LED on the MB that shows when there is power, and there is a green one that comes on only when I turn the computer on/and goes off when it shuts down.

You guys think the MB/CPU may be shot???????
I need any help, ASAP!!!!
thanks,
mark

Looks fried to me.

I think its most likely that the cpu is fried (this happened to my brothers computer too :D). Put your computers cpu into your brothers (if its compatible) and check if it loads.

As i said its much more likely the Cpu is fried than the actual motherboard.

When this happened to my brother we changed everything, ram, motherboard, cpu...even the graphics card was fried! and this happened from out of nowhere. try out a different cpu, if that doesn't work, then maybe a new computer will :( the only things which you can save are the hard disk, cd-rom, case and floppy disk

I had the same thing happen to me with a cheap ass case/psu.
It killed a bh6, but not the cpu. I was lucky however when I called Abit they were happy to RMA it for me, after almost 2 years.
However I will never,NEVER buy a cheap psu again. I will only buy enermax or antec. I would rather have a reliable psu that can take voltage spikes and the like without killing my equipment. If I were you, I would take that pos comp usa psu back and spend a little bit more and get a decent psu. Just tell your brother it's money well spent.
I do think it's an injustice for case mfg to equip there cases whith $h!t when it comes to the power supply. Think about it for a moment. You spend a fair amount of money on the parts to build a decent computer only to buy a cheap case with a cheap, dirty power supply, it makes no sense.
Good luck and I hope you can get some warrenty coverage on some of the damage.

I think the PSU took down things with it especially the things sucking real power: HDD for an example.

You should bring it to a local vendor that will give you an estimate to fix it.

But I think you might have taken some serious components with it....
