View Full Version : Alternate way to run as service on XP and W2K!!
I found this on the email list. I do not know if it will also work on win2k.
Well, this may not be what you are looking for. But have you tried to
schedule a task to run it upon system boot?
Just open the Control Panel and open Scheduled Tasks. Then click on Add
Scheduled Task. I will assume you are running the console (non-gui) version,
so you will have to click on the browse button and find the console exe file.
Then you can name the task and select When my Computer Starts. Next screen
you would enter Administrator in the user name field and the password you set
up for Administrator. Then on next screen, click on the open advanced
properties when I click finish.
After you click Finish, a new window pops up, click on the settings tab and
uncheck Stop the task if it runs for 72 hours 0 minutes. Click Apply and
then OK. Then when you re-boot it will start FAH console and you won't see
any Command Prompt window.
It will continue to fold hidden even if you log out.
It will work on the GUI version as well. You just pick the GUI exe and when
you re-boot, it runs and there is no icon in the tray next to the clock.
I don't know if this is considered a service or not. But it seems like it
does something similar to what a service does.

Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!
Please report back as to whether it works. If someone will try it on win2k it would be appreciated. I am busy today but will try it tommorow. Fold on!!!
I can try it in xp and 2k and see what happens. I had problems before trying to run it as a service in 2k using firedaemon. It was a laptop but that shouldn't matter. If it works it will be a good thing. My PIII with win2k will finish it's current wu at about 10 pm tonight. I don't want to shut it off until then since it is halfway through and it's already worked for hours on it, just in case the client decides to download new work after being restarted.
OK. I have it running in win2k on my laptop and it is indeed running and hidden from view. I assume that it will not shut off after this so that seems like a good thing. We'll see how it's running in a few days.

Yes, this works in W2k. I have 2 processes of console running on my dually rig and there is no indication other than the task manager that they are working. No icons or anything.
WooHoo
We need this in the FAQ in progress thread. It was definitely a nice find Kendan. It was posted in the folding@home main list? OK I found it. :D

Question:
I am having trouble running F@H2 as a service on Win XP home.
I am the only user so no passwords are set for users, and the error I get in the task manager says something like :
application not executed due to invalid/missing password
Anyone know a simple workaround for XP? I really dont want to have to login a password.
I am not sure if I have to do anything to boot up with administrative privledges since I have only one user and no password.
Lastly, has anyone been able to get XP home and F@H2 to dial an internet connection (mine is DSL of the NOT always-on variety) to get additional WU's? I already have XP configured to always dial my default connection, but I dont think F@H2 does anything to trigger windows to go for the connection.
Any ideas or comments appreciated...
I wish I could help but I am not using dialup or XP. Give it a little time and someone should be able to help.
Did it ask for an admin password when installing XP? It should have. This is a password for the admin account and the functions that it runs. It never asked for a password for my individual user account though.

Hmmm, if you do this, what do you do to be able to see the console window? Say for instance you want to see the timestamping on the 2.17 version. If I was using hideit then I could just use the -show flag. Anyone know if there is something similar with this option?

what p/w did you enter when you scheduled the task?
I have XP right now and have set it to automatically log on for me with the win2k style logon.
basically, go to run, type in 'control userpasswords2', check 'users must enter a user name and pw', then it will ask for your username and password. Then everytime you reboot, it will automatically log in for you.
I also think you need to have selected win2k style logon from the user accounts options.
hope this helps,

What I do to see the time stamping is open up FAHlog.txt in NoteTab (or any text editor). It basically gives you what you would see in the console as if it was running normally. With NoteTab it will tell you when the file has been updated so you can reload it when the logfile has been updated.

You can do what Lews said and you can use Fold Monitor to see your progress. In Fold Monitor you can also see the log by clicking clients then click log.

Sounds good. Thanks Lews and kendan. Actually I knew about that Fold Monitor option but had forgotten it :o Duh! I've killed way to many brain cells.

Ok, I got that service bit to work fine. I just had to go and set myself a password. It adds the added hassle of having to type in a password each time I boot, but that is no big deal.
It is slick in that no icon shows in the systray.
I will know when I get home later tonight if it was smart enough to dial for more workunits.

You should be able to change that. The option should be in the user administration panel. I believe that it gives you the option to have one user automatically login. It's been a while since I set that up though, but I have passwords and don't have to manually login in xp and 2k. Anyway. Glad you got that fixed.
