View Full Version : Advice on what DDR2 to buy
hey :)
i feel bad for not being active lately :( but again this still is the place i turn to for OC fun and Q&A!
since im skint lately and cant get to upgrade PC as i usually do i decided to go for a lil DDR2 upgrade cuz they're really cheap.
i need 8gb and i dont mind the 4 sticks, but im not updated about which sticks are the best lately, if some1 can point me ill be thankful!

These right now seem to be one of the up and coming things, brand new low voltage sticks that supposedly OC well. I'm kinda watching for a few independent reviews first :)
The post 18 is #1 put up is about em right next to this.

G.skills
I have gone exclusively to G. skill after too many issues with both OCZ and Corsair.
thnx for the replies :)
well my mobo is known for voltage issues (at least for me lol) it gave me a pretty hard time to OC with the tracers.
those OCS sticks sound promising, so ill check between them and the g.skills and decide then!
tx again!

I'm partial to Mushkins (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146785). Like Adragontattoo, I have had too many issues with OCZ products. No objections to Corsair or G.Skill though.

Ya i have been awol on these boards for quite some time myself, but the absolute best advice can be found here. Im personally thinking of using this memory,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231166
with this Mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358
and this cpu

Im hoping i picked decent parts as well, to achieve a sick overclock. My rig will be solely for gaming btw. Thanks again everyone for the help.

The Pi 1100sshould do about 1160 5-5-5 1.9v
The new Blades are doing ~1260 at equal timings/voltage or less.
For those of you moaning about OCZ, I would like to remind you that it's a quality company and this is a new product with new ICs. Sorry if you had problems in the past, but it happens with mobo/RAM conflicts.

You may have noticed in my signature, my mobo went south. My new one should be here tomorrow. This is someone I trust: http://www.overclock.net/intel-memory/511351-ocz-blade-lv-ddr2-1261mhz-5-a.html

There is no substitute! 55 per 4gb, I recommend going crazy and grabbing 4 sticks :D Have installed 20 sticks of these in different systems, haven't seen one yet that doesn't do rated speed and timings at only 2.0v (well if only using 4gb, 8gb usually needs to be run slower to ease the load on the mem controller)

yeah i saw you post in another thread , srry to hear that i hope it really was the mobo and not something else , thanks for the link and looking forward to your own results .
I second that kit malakai suggested , i have those very solid memory , one thing tho my kit would barely go past the manufactures spec .

I have some 2x1 Titainiun 800 3-4-4-18. Very nice sticks. Still, the new LV Platinum or Blades appear to be the way to go.

a) I am highly skeptical of 1066@1.8v, esp at those timings!
b) At 80/4gb we are approaching low end ddr3-1600 prices. The gskills do 1066 at 2.0-2.1v, that is not enough to damage the ram or shorten its life beyond any realistic expectation of use (I have yet to have ram die on me past a faulty stick dying in the first week, ever).
So even if the claims are true I would almost certainly still take the 55 dollar gskill 2x2 packs.
thnx for the replies ppl, ill keep u posted on what im buying :)

Most of those that have bought them are finding they max out around there at 1.9v

That is rated speed. OCZ also have 9200 and 9600 sets at the same voltage and timings.
I replaced my mobo, but didn't solve my issue (can't boot into XP). Took my machine to the local PC doctor. My take a couple of more days before I can tell you my own tests. At least I can honestly tell my wife that upgrading the mobo was what I thought was needed. :p
I did have the Blades at 1150 5-5-5 1.8v on my Abit Pro, but that's as high as that mobo had ever run any RAM.

I have Mushkin Redlines, but they don't seem to like low timings. They run great at higher clock speeds. My last set of Mushkin RAM, DDR2-1066 5-5-4-10 worked great at lower timings and higher speeds. But after several months they died because of a voltage issue while running in 4 sticks.

I hope your right. I bought a kit of these today since newegg was having their memory sale ($46 shipped) so we will see.
I'm a little concerned how well they will work with my G31 motherboard since its only rated for 1066 with OCing. As long as they run at 1066MHz with their stated timings Ill be happy.

They should definitely do that. They are just not going much higher. It is good stuff though.

Well, the OCZ Blade 9600's LV are running @ 1186 rock solid at the moment, just stuck em in about an hour ago, actually seem to be more stable than my reaper's I had at 1069.
Running a Prime 95 blend test as I'm typing :)
Off to play around a bit with these

Yeah right, I wish hehe
About best I've gotten em to boot up into Vista so far is 1229 with the Q9650 at 8.5 x 490.
Can't do much there though I guess, Prime locks up right off the bat.
But messing around I think Ill be able to get em at 1200 and a nice boost on my regular speed on my CPU OC I guess at any rate.
Have to mess around some more :) at least they've gotten me from a flat 4.0 1069 OC
Im beginning to think 1186 might end up being my stable setting though
:p

Play with the voltage some. Try anywhere from 1.6-2.0v
I haven't found any help above 1.9v

Yeah, I have been a little bit I think I had em on 1.9 when I got em to boot there.
Been testing and rebooting enough for awhile, might do a few other things tonight a bit. I do love em though, beats hell out of the reapers that I had a long time now I'd say.
I liked those too myself but these are an improvement.
They seem nice and stable right where they are in prime on all the tests, just have to tweak things more and increase I guess :)

I think it's regional. All my free shipping from the Egg is UPS. Of course I also live 15 miles from the DFW UPS regional distribution center.
