I'm usin 98se right now, and if I'm d/lin alot of files over night, or burning a cd. When I come back to the comp its all slow and like takes a while to get back up too speed. And I mean really slow, if u minamize a window it like slides away insead of jumpin down into the start menu, things take forever to load.
I was thinkin it had something to do with 98se's bad mem mangament...
And I'm gettin a new HD soon, And 98se just dosen't seem to be able to cut it anymore so I was wondering what OS I should give a shot.
Everyone says XP and 2000 are really stable and has better mem mangament then the 9x versions, and u can leave em running for months at a time :P
That ain't happeing with 98
But also XP has some compatability problems with older hardware/software, just wondering if it's worth it...
Or should I wait till the service pack comes out?
The main reson I wana get rid of 98se is cuz the slow downs and the instability...
Also u can use more then 512megs of ram in XP :P
Could use the extra sicks I got sittin around.
pritty much all I do is d/l, burn cd's and play ALOT of Descent 3

So what u guys recommed
stick with 98se,
XP
or
win2k

I, personally, just went from 98se to XP pro Corporate (same as pro just no activation) and I love it. I still want to see what all the hype is about with win2k... but so far it works great... as far as compatability... i'm using a sound blaster 16 value ISA sound card and it works fine... no problems... just sounds like **** :p

Seeing you have very good system specs I'd go with Windows XP Pro.

It is very good especially if you have a good rig.

After a good tweak too it'll run fast.

I suggest 2000, I have run all the MS operating systems since Win 3.0 (except ME) and Win2K is the best of the bunch: all the speed and stability of NT, plug and play and compatibility from 9x, and a lot less bloat and resource hogging than XP. IMO.

Well my vote goes for XP Pro Corp. its fast and stable like 2k and i didnt notice any resource hogging...of course both 2k and XP need proper tweaking ;)

Well I'm sure disabling all those services will be the first thing I do :P

I like Nothing running with my comp, like right now Msconfig has like 3 things in it, when u hit alt-ctrl-del all u see is exploer and system tray, and theres 0 icons in system tray :P

BTW: does anyone know when the first service pack for XP will be out?

I ran the XP compatbility checker at the MS site just now, it found a few things :P
but I think it's just cuz there not usin XP drivers...

These are all the things it said wouldn't work in XP....

Display adapters
3dfx Voodoo Series (Voodoo 5 5500)

-I know I can get drivers for this...

Printer
Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 930C

Sound, video and game controllers
CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device (Onboard C-Media Sound)
Logitech Gaming Devices

-Can get XP drivers for this too...

Universal Serial Bus controllers
ImageMate CompactFlash Drive (Digi cam card reader)

-Dunno about this...

3dfx Tools (in Control Panel) (Vid card Control Pannel)
System Information (in Control Panel)

SiSoft Sandra 2001te Standard (Duh) :P

DirectCD 3

DVD Movie Player

Windows 2000 Professional all the way.

Its more stable, has better compatability, and less stuff to take up your valuable resourses than XP.

If you were running win2k and happy with it I wouldn't upgrade to winxp. if on the otherhand you have to buy an OS anyway I recomend winxp. One of my freinds got a copy from one of his enployers and didn't need it so gave it to me and I have been running it for 2 months with no more problems then I had on win2k.

My question would be, are either one having game compatability problems? I know win2k did a while back.

I just installed XP Pro and have one software compatibility problem (minor). However, I have managed to crash the program completely (auto reboot or blue screen with the feature turned off, no startup items, sitting at desktop), not hardware conflict. I have some old components might have been that. Plus XP need lots of tweaking to run at a acceptable spped. I am going back to win2K Pro.

win2k pro i have found to be the best
XP gave me alot of problems
and for me its too new an OS for my liking

as for uptimes, week and a half atm on win2k pro
topped out at a month previously
win2k claims memory back as if it was going out of fashion
and should have no problems with drivers

I'd say go with Windows XP. So far the only problem I had i a game would not install not a big thing tho. So far in every benchmark I have ran I've gaid more points. With 3Dmark2001 I was able to get almost 600 more points.

I just did the upgrade to XP Pro from WIn2K Pro, personally I think its slower. I cant get Wolfenstien to run. It says missing glide ?? something. I can find original VooDoo5 Drivers for XP? XP reports that I only have 32 meg of ram on the card ! its a 64 meg ram AGP card. I am running a SOYO Dragon plus with 256 meg 2700 DDR. I probbly will go back to win2K this weekend. Too many problems, I had to disable my external cache in my bios to get it to run , this slows down my sustem. I Duno you guys have any input ??

Consider this: now that XP is the newest "mainstream" OS a lot of companies will be focusing their software and driver development toward XP first and 2k second.

Just my $.02

A good point!
Although XP is not an upgrade from Win2K, merely a version of the os intended more for basic users (Win2K is keeping the business/IT category), most people think it is, so most software developers will concentrate more on that. Fortunately for IT and Win2K the differences are few, so Win2K will get 99% of the stuff XP does.

From what I can discern of MS's current releases/strategy XP is to reside in the Home and Small Business arena and Win2K is intended for large businesses, heavy-duty networking and server fields, the crossover area being mostly in medium-sized networks.

and That is My $.02.:D
