how exactly does it work? is it like if i bought a gtx 260 core 216 for $180 in may, then somewhere in july, ati release their 5800s, nvida card would lower in price somehow, then by a chance of miracle, the gtx 275 or 280 fall to around $180 too( i know, i know, but this is all assumption -.-"), i can swap my gtx 260 for one of those card for free right? except i'll have to pay shipping, and pay extra if the card is above the price of my gtx 260?

False. Newegg and EVGA often have the same exact prices. Sometimes Newegg will have a lower price though, but still saying EVGA's store is always higher than Newegg's prices is just wrong.

And to answer the question, you have to register your card within 30 days or so of getting it. Then you have 90 days to step up from the date of purchase. You get the amount you paid for the card as a credit towards a card available to step up to in the EVGA store + shipping.

if the gtx 300 series come out within the next 90 days, then i'm in some major luck for 275/280, i think it'll be used to counter ati's 5800s though

Basically you pay the difference between the price on your invoice vs the MSRP of the card, which is the price you see when you click the step up button. If the price is $0 or lower you will only pay shipping, you wont get money back. A lot of people can get cards for just shipping. It is great.

You also have to wait w/o a card for a while. I live on the east coast, and I'm not willing to pay a lot of extra money for shipping, so it can take about 2 weeks to get the new card back. Better have a backup ready while you wait or be willing to go w/o a PC for a while.
