ok so i just joined today, seems like a pretty place lol, well onto the problem.
i just recently upgraded my system from a mainstream hp pavillion with phenom x4(9550)/nvidia 8800gt to a completly new rig.my rig is as following
antec 900 case
MSI-790gx-G65
DDR3-Patriot ram-1333 (3x2GB)
Saphire 4870x2
Seventeam-750w PSU
fresh install Windows ultimate(SP1)
phenom II-955(Black Edition)
and my old sata HDD(500GB) form my hp
CD/DVDRW-lightscribe, bblah, blah, blah
anyways i have the newest ati drivers 9.5, i flashed my mobo to recognize my 3.2mhz processor, and im having problems.
i have gta4(retail) with all patches, i've read around and i know it has some problems with CF and SLi, but ive seen some workarounds, and im getting stuttering, anyways, the deal is Crysis(ery high); it lags badly, well in combat at least, i dont know if thats normal but i believe i bought a 4870x2 not a regular 4870 and from what ive seen in videos people run it flawlessly, even in combat situations with settings on very high. and also on 3dmark06-Professional i get a score of about 18200, when i see people with the same cards and lower procesors get an average of 20k+ :bang head
the settings i run 3dmark 06 on is all on default, and the resolution also at default(with 1280x1024 resolution)
if anyone can help me in on this i would glady appeciate it, or even if you just have some comments, all is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

btw sorry if this sentence is misleading
""i have the newest ati drivers 9.5, i flashed my mobo to recognize my 3.2mhz processor, and im having problems.""
i acctually flashed my mobo, before this vista ultimate installation.

i think 1800 points is about right for your system as for crysis on what resolution are you running it ?

I was able to get 21,500 with my rig in sig, but a big part of it is the extra 400Mhz I have on your chip with my current OC. I also OC'd my crossfired 4870's slightly as well, that alone got me about 300-500 extra points. if you got that CPU up to the 3.6-3.8Ghz range you would see scores around 20k+ i bet :)

your scores are fine bro and as for frames on crysis thats all your gonna get at that res with that cpu your cpu is being a huge bottle neck

and why do you say my cpu is a "Huge bottleneck"
can the Phenom II 955(Black Edition) really bee that much of a bottle neck??, i mean all my parts are amd and have the latest cpu by amd and latest GPU by amd aswell(well excluding the 4890)
do you have AA turned on in crysis? i can run crysis on very high @ 2048x1152 without aa with an avg fps of 40-45. You should be able to avg about the same.
btw, i'm at stock 3ghz, not oc'd anymore.

you see, thats what ticks me:bang head
i have AA off yes, i do get around 40 frames, but only when im faacing like the water, or the hills where theres not much to render, but like in action i get around 15 frames, with my old 8800gt i was getting the same thing, but that was the 8800gt, i got a 4870x2 not just some regular card. ive found people with lower specs than mine that run it better, arrrrg!

and those are stock speeds?? O_0
i mean i saw the 17 290 i believe, when i was first shopping, but it was a staggering $1k i probably spent $1.5k building mine, i wasnt gonna fork over another $1k just for a processor, do you know of any tool i can use to overclock my pehnom II, ive tried AMd Overdrive, but it messes up on me, if you dont know of any other program, do you know where i can get an overclock Tutorial, or BIOS OC tutorial if any, thanks.:)

The 965 Extreme is the $1k chip. My 920 was around $300 when I got it. Now you can get a D0 stepping of the 920 for around $330-ish and it will hit about 4.5ghz on air from what I have gathered from peoples posts who have them.

no of course not lol those speeds are achieved through overclocking you should go to the amd cpu section of the forum and learn how to overclock that way you can get the most out of your pc
btw im guessing your using the stock cooler...if your going want to oc a lot your going to need a better cpu cooler and the best way to oc is through bios

ok thanks for the help, i will do now, and i want to OC my 955BE to about 3.5, maybe 3.6, do you think i can be able to achieve that through the stock heatsink/fan that came with it,am i able to increase the fan speed on it(i mean i disabled C&Q)? and also one more thing, my temp on full load while playing gta4 was about 48C is that bad? im thinking of getting that extra side fan for my antec 900

You should be able to hit 3.5 with the stock cooler if your case has plenty of airflow. Just watch your temps. 48C load is not bad but it will definitely go up if overclocked. Keep the load temp under 60C and you should be fine.

yea with that case you should be able to keep temps pretty low man
but i dont know how well amd's oc im a intel guy but 3.6 is only 400 mhz away so im guessing it should do it lol...
btw you should look into getting a TRUE heatsink their the best

Can you tell us specific 3dmark score breakdown? But 18k sounds fine, I get 25k, but the gtx295 is a bit better and I have a core i7 overclocked.
Tested any other games? Far Cry 2 is a good game to try for fps, as it even has a benchmark tool :D

yeah, hey i went into my bios and turned off cool and quiet and turned up the cpu multiplier by 17x witch gave me an overclock of 3.4ghz and my temperatures are still around 40C did i do it correct or was i supposed to set some other settings around aswell?, i just got 19073 now-everything efault 3dmark06

05-28-09, 07:45 PM
ok, update guys, i Oc'd to 3.6ghz i put the multiplier by 17.5 i believe and my cpu-nb to 2200 including my HT-link to 2200 (as they both need to be the same correct?) and im at 50C full load, is this good, because i think the performance is adequate for me i dont want to go higher, are the setings good, or will something explode lol, btw i got a new score of
19836 in 3dmark06, better?
Firaguy, overclocking your chip is the easy part, Now you have to test for stability. Download prime95 and run 4 instances of it. There are sticky's in the forum on how to do that so you will need to read read read. Overclocking is a long and tedious process. 50C is a good temp for full load, but after running stress testing, expect it to go up. Just stay at 60C or below. you can go higher to about 65C but i would start looking at better cooling solutions as running at that heat for prolonged amounts of time will wear the life of your cpu. Good luck, and remember, Read up on what you need to do in order to stabilize and have patience.

glad you got a higher score...how are your frame rates on the games? and yea your temps are fine but your going to need a better chip to go higher

thanks for the info guys, sorry ive been away for so long, my pc locked up 2 times, probably like 8 hours after overclocking, so i just defaulted it, i dont think its stable enough, and yes i will research more onto this, and btw if any of you have played second life before, i dont think they support sli/crossifre atm, i tried disabling AI in the toolbar, but i still see the shapes all distorted and all =/
