I know that this is probably a newbie question but i'm wondering what is the difference between front side bus and system clock. i know to get your internal clock you mulitply the system clock by the multiplier.

but what is the front side bus and how does it differ from the system clock....

If i'm right, the system clock is the clock the memory and all the other devices run on while the FSB is what the cpu uses.
I.E. Memory is at 133mhz (system clock) and FSB is at 170 (FSB)

It may be the other way around, but i'm almost positive it's this way. correct me if i'm wrong.

faster fsb good for multimedia...
higher multiplier good for number crunchin (Seti)

Your cpu speed is seperate from your fsb. Your cpu will perform calculations at the designated speed (mhz)but the sytem clock/fsb will run at a set speed.The cpu takes the system clock speed and doubles it. So say that you have a motherboard that runs at 133, then you have a cpu that runs at 266.Remember, only the CPU runs at 266. The system clock(fsb) and the rest of your hardware sitting on the fsb will run at 133mhz.Changing the multipliers directly affects the cpu,not the fsb.Now, increasing your fsb increases your cpu mhz because as I said it takes the fsb value and doubles it.;)

there is two
multlipier and the fsb
if you increse the multlipier
and you increase the fsb that will be faster

The front side bus is the bus (data path) that the rest of your system runs on. So when you raise your FSB, you're raising the rate at which everything can communicate to each other.

The system clock and the FSB are usually the same thing, though it really depends on the usage of the word. OEMs use the processor speed as the system speed (eg 800MHz system for $300!)

you should read up on info about PLL phase lock loop

this plays the biggest role in the FSB
