View Full Version : How can I tell what type of RAM I've got? It was in an old pc, but...
I just pulled the RAM out of my old Duron pc to put into my server bringing it to 1.5gb of RAM and I can't figure out what type it is lol. I know its a 512mb stick, but is there a way to find out what type this stick is?
It's Kingston and theres a model number on it. It's got 4 chips on it.

cpu-z might be able to detect it not sure
No matter, it's different anyways. Now, why on earth are DDR SDRAM DIMMs so damn much? I mean $80 for 2gb of DDR400 SDRAM?

DDR is no longer in mainstream production. That is why is costs so much. If you want high cost per meg. Look at PC100/133 sticks. Low demand makes the price go up.
I need the DDR 400 though, that's all this old POS computer takes lol.

Understandable. :D Now if you can convince about 10 million computer users to demand a bump in production. We can get the price to drop some.
Your best bet would to make sure the board itself can handle that much RAM. A lot of the older boards could only take a gig or so. I have an old s462 that is limited by the board to 1gig of RAM.
Now for the best prices. If you can anyways. Hit the Wanted section of the forums. See what pops up.
If I was to part with my magical DDR400 OCZ. I would ask no less than $150 for the 1gig kit. [ I am not offering to sell.] But when you have a golden kit. Like PC2700 BH5 or the like. It still can fetch a fine price. Mundane prices on a deal for 2 gig kits is going to be hard to get. Since for the time. No one bought that much. 1gig was the rule. It was at DDR2, we started to use more than that.
Keep in mind. Any DDR1 RAM will work in the board. Long as the voltage is right. Barring it simply being incompatible with the RAM's JEDEC and the board maker.
You can even pop in PC2700 or PC2100 in a pinch. If the voltage is right. Since most bards of the era supported downwards in the BIOS. DDR is backwards compatible for the most part.
I was surprised when I looked up my discontinued board, it supports 4gb of DDR ram lol. I found another 1gb set on Newegg for $36 so I guess I'll get that.

Try ebay, might be cheaper.
Check a microseconds or local computer repair shop. they may have used kits fairly cheap... not knowing the scarcity
