Well the onboard sound of my laptop has died. It works sometimes, other times it crackles, most of the time nothing. Same symptoms in Ubuntu and Windows XP, so I know it's not drivers. Also the headphone jack doesn't work, which further leads me to believe it's a hardware issue. Nothing else seems to be having problems though, and it's out of warrenty. So what PCMCIA sound cards are out there? I remember the Creative Audigy 2 ZS but it seems that was discontinued. Newegg doesn't have it, and Amazon is $380.

As long as there is opensource linux drivers, and windows drivers it's good. I'd prefer something under $50 too, if possible.

Also check USB soundcards if you have a USB port open.

Something like that will give you sound, not great sound, but likely as good as your laptop was and at only $20.

If you have to get PCMCIA you could go with this, but for $90:

Thanks Maxvla, I think I'll have to go with a USB one. I'd much rather have a PCMCIA, as I don't use that slot, while I only have 4 USB ports, of which I constantly use 2, if I want to plug in a flash drive make that three. Nonetheless I can give up a USB port for sound I think ;).
