windows 98 won't run?

Got a comp from a friend it will boot and load the windows screen than go into safe mode than I get windows protection error exe VXD or VKD shut down your comp or reboot without seeing windows program what do I do to fix it.

It won't let you into windows in safe mode? Can you do a clean install?

Sounds to me like a Windows File corruption some where if you can reformat or best refdisk and then reinstall its the best option as a reinstall may not overwrite those files and still get the layer and the Win98 will run very "half-assed"..
