Contrary to what some people say
There are stupid questions. But this is not one of them.
I built my first computer a year ago with help from these people.
I don't know if anyone has any recent articles but last year Cnet.com and sharkysextreme.com had step by step guides.
also check out the beginner guides on the front page.
then come back and ask all the questions you want in the general hardware topic or other corisponding catigory.
welcome to the addiction.... um I mean welcome to the forum.

Hmm does rebuilding an Atari STe count as building a PC? Did it when I was 7, took the entire thing apart and put it back together. Even back then I had OC'ing tendancies, upgraded the RAM from sub 1MB to 4MB and the 512K floppy to 1.44 floppy. Ever since then, I've been building and modding my own PCs :)

It's always good to build computer by yourself. At least you will never be cheated on the hardware and you can save money on the labor. Yeah, I have all my computers built by myself.
Actually read their guides but heres one word of advice:
Its very easy, the motherboard manual will tell you how to put it in and the rest is just snap snap and snap.
Just make sure you get those anti static wrist straps and touch the case before working ON ANYTHING in the case as you don't want to easily kill components like that.

Very good point, the manual will tell you most of what you need to know. Read ALL the manuals for ALL of your equipment before you begin. That is a big must, you'll have a better understanding of what your gear is capable of afterwords. If you need help with anything in the manuals, or with something not covered by the manuals, Just let us know. :)

thanks a lot :)
Just always remember when you get the manual just go downstairs and read it memorize it, understand it!
Then you'll be ready..

Building a computer is simple. Try Tomshardware at www.tomshardware.com They give good instructions if you are a newb :)

Get an Xbox. They will be online soon and whenever they do you would forget all about your pc if they make the right games.:o
Tom has good things other than benchmarking here is his article from step 5 which is assembling the PC.

ok, i have the physical installation down... but theres only one more thing that im not sure of. And thats installing my hard drive. I know I should format it, but do I have to partition it first, format it first, or what? And to format, what commands do I need to know? And can you plz provide a link for downloadable boot disks? Sorry im asking for so much, but this PC thing is really addicting... :p

Doesn't Win2k let you make boot disks???
You will need to partition then format. FDISK should partition, FORMAT C:\ should... well... format.

so after i partition and format, then i should reboot and install my OS, correct?

I usually partition, reboot, format, reboot then install the OS.
Win2K Utilities are like doing the work for you. They just boot w/ the 4 bootdisks then you hit enter on the partition you want to set it up on then from there it asks you if you want NTFS or FAT32 partition (Choose NTFS, much better secruity wise and optimization) and then it installs.
Win98 you must use the fdisk command in the A drive and create a primary partition then reboot then format it and then install Windows.
