View Full Version : 1.3 Duron Unlockable?

I just read a comparison of the 1.3 Duron and the 1.3 celeron at tomshardware http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/02q1/020121/index.html Not much news there, except for this last paragraph:

An interesting result turned up in our overclocking test: despite the fact that we bridged the L1 contact, the multiplier of the AMD CPU could not be released. So it remains to be seen whether this has to do with a special hand-picked CPU sample, or whether AMD has now made it a general rule to lock the multiplier. This presents a new challenge for us.

Now, I don't think tomshardware is completely inept, so this kinda scares me. Say it ain't so, AMD! don't turn your back on your loyal customers.

Has anyone seen one of these successfully unlocked?

That is slighty disturbing to say the least.. wow a Duron at 1.5ghz in the future wouldn't that be something...

the last morgan will be 1.4 before they switch to new core

Clawhammer is the new MP that is pending. I believe its supposed to be 64bit(or is that sledgehammer) to compete with the Intel Itanium. Amd is breaking the corporate seen. HOORAY!!! It'll be good to see them make this advance.

Cheers:beer:

ok, it's been a couple weeks since I started this thread. Let's see if anything has changed. Anyone successfully unlocked a 1.3 Duron?

don't we all miss the Trusty #2 Pencil? my GF's 800mhz Duron is penciled running at 1050mhz w/ a lil' voltage bump.. no fsb tinkering needed... thats an extremely desirable feature of AMD.. they shouldn't completely lock the mulitplier, thats a great advantage over Intel

i have been in close contact with AMD for the last 4 months or so

they are sponsoring a donating CPU's and Engineering testing Mobo's for my hardware reliability class. ]

I have talked to them several times about the locked multiplier issue

an if fact, they are thinking about locking them like intel

they even told me that it wasn't so much because of the overclocking, but they are having problems with people overclocking them and restamping them and selling them as higher speed cpu's, like what happened with Intel

and they said its a pretty big issue becasue they feel that the fact that you can unlock the multiplier gives them an advantage over Intel, but the RMA's are alsp costing them money

If AMD would just hardcode a string into the CPU code with the clockspeed in it... anyone would be able to tell the chip's true speed and then the remarkers would be caught fairly easily without having to lock multipliers. It's really dumb, frankly. AMD is shooting themselves in the foot for a couple bucks they don't see. :(
