View Full Version : Case cooling problem
My temps are WAY too high!
I've got 3 fans:
1 80mm Antec on my FOP38 blowing in (I tried sucking, and it, well, sucked)
1 80mm Noname blowing in from the front
1 80mm Noname sucking out the back
I KNOW this is not enough, but I have no more room for fans in my case w/o some serious modding (breaking out the holesaw, spending more of my paycheque) and I'm not about to buy another case after what I've done to this (http://human.home.dhs.org/computer) one. Any ideas?
Oh, and I can't fit anything bigger than an 80mm in, so anything like 92mm or 120mm are out of the question. I can't even fit those sizes in w/ modding.
Is there any hope for me?
*edit* My max load temp w/ the side on is 52.5 (by my compunurse touching my die) w/ a vcore of 1.50. The die is damaged. I've already tried reseating the heatsink to no avail. Its dead-stable at the temp above (I mean, I can run Quake 3 in a timedemo loop while running Folding@Home)
Nice auto-style paint job, I can see you taking the picture in it!
Judging from the back of the case picture, you should cutout the perforated fan grilles on the case. This alone will give you 50% more airflow from the fans, as well as quiet them down some too.
You can also find discrete places to trim away the plastic of the front bezel to give better airflow into the front. There's always a small slot on the bottom of the bezel that can be doubled in size without being seen. You can add rubber feet to the bottom of the case if this slot is too close to the tabletop too.
Ya don't have to have a holesaw to make these holes clean either, just trim from hole to hole with a pair of steel shears. (tin snips) You can also sandwich a piece of window screen between the fan and the case to make an improv fan guard so you keep your fingers intact. (painting the screen black makes a blackout effect too)
Hope these ghetto cheap ideas help.....ciao
Thank you, I'll take those into consideration.
I was actually planning on taking the perforated blockages out this Friday, but I'll have to try widening the opening @ the bottom front of my case as well. I usually hang it over the side of my little table, so no need for new feet.
thx!

Flip the rear and front fans over and you will get a 3C drop
I know thats backward of usual air flow. Just try it and tell us what you find.
great case
An all black hoot on the back of that baby would be very cool.
I'll try flipping the fans around as well. I never thought of doing that.
Hopefully I'll be able to do this all tomorrow.
All the extra case cooling is great but you can further your performance by using a new heatsink. I highly reccomend a SVC (http://svcompucycle.com) golden gate for price and performance.
Sorry, new heatsink is out of the question entirely. Becides the fact that I can't order online (NOBODY I know has a credit card) finding a shop around here who'll even consider ordering one is hard, and even then, it'll be about $75CDN for a good one.
bump
any more suggestions?

I got a couple for ya:
1) If your case has 3 parts, top and 2xsides, try having all fans blow in and takin the top off(convertable computer :D ) Since heat rises this may help a little.
2) I used a piece of ducting from home depot ($6) and some duct tape ($4). Ran the duct from my window to case fan on the back. Blows the outside air, which is usually about -20 to 0c here right over the HS/F.
Hope ya find a good solution.

The top of my case is fixed by rivets, and I'd have to drill the rivits out to get it off (someday, but not today)
And I would've ducted it to the window, but my computer is no where near it.
Thanks for the suggestions though. Keep em comming!

I'm pretty much in the same boat so I cut a 80mm blowhole in the floor of my case blowing up onto the video card and memory. My temps went down 4c, I've got a 92mm that fits, so I'm going to mod the hole a little more. Also my case sits on feet so its up off the desk enough to get plenty of air. Looks like you got plenty of room there for the same mod. Good luck Oni.

maybe I'll try that. Its a little less invasive than a blowhole in the top. I'd need to put feet on it however to give it enough clearance off of the desk.
Ding dong the evil grills are dead!!
I got my dad to take em off w/ a die grinder (both front under the plastic housing and in back) and I'm currently crusing the boards at a very sedate 40.7c by my Compunurse. I've NEVER seen temperatures this low before! This is GREAT! I can FINALLY overclock more (I KNOW this thing'll hit 1250 . . . I can FEEL it)!
The noise changed however. Not louder, just . . . different. Different pitch.
Thank you for all your helpful suggestions!!

Right on, watch those fingers and other stuff now. You will notice more dust, keep her clean! Add more fans, get used to the noise, its worth it, and congrats now clock that baby! Is that 40c under 100% cpu load?
No, thats at idle. its about 46.5 +/- .2 loaded up, which is good enough for me, considering that it used to be about 52.5 loaded up.
