View Full Version : Possible PSU Noise?

I was finally getting around to overclocking my CPU today and had it running at 3.6ghz at stock volts(1.15v) and twice, for about ten seconds while prime'ing to see temps/brief stability testing I heard what sounded like an air leak or hissing coming from my case. It ended before I could locate it's source.

Is this something to worry about?.

Do you have the ability to record the sound? Never heard a PSU hissing before. Sure it wasn't the fan detecting warmer temps and spinning up?

its probably the vregs on your mobo.. nothing to worry about man my p5q deluxe used to do that too

I have no idea whether it was the PSU, but I heard it across the room and by the time I got close enough to detirmine anything it had subsided.

I wasn't sure what could cause it outside of the PSU, hence me asking if it was a possible PSU noise

i have the exact same thing,
happens to my everytime my gpu is under stress
it is caused by noisy coils (thats what people have said to me)
and apparaently it is not an issue

it sounded like a canister of water...with a hole in it
and only started happening when i ran my powersupply with a pretty high load

edit - just read this on another forum

That noise is a choke on either the MB, vid card or in the PSU, many devices make it, it's normal under stress, higher voltages and higher OC's to notice. If you're stable, not overheating, no capacitors are about to burst (if they're the older kind (non-solid) you'll be able to tell because they'll look like they're ballooning).

Odds are it's from the chokes related to CPU supply voltage, I've heard it on different components at different loads and OC's for years, I haven't had a failure because of it.
