get a RAMDisk, keep it always powered on, install your OS there, try not to use hard disk, use win3.1 if possible

okay okay:D just get more RAM

Poor Miss Winnie, she's been complaining of this problem since last summer. She's probably really sick and tired of that computer by now. I suggest several things back then including the possibility of it running hot and causing the thermal throttling to kick in. I'm guessing installing a better CPU cooler and using a good thermal paste should really make a difference. Insufficient RAM, a slow harddrive, and/or Windows having lots of registery errors all could be possible problems too.

Hmm if its Win 98 < - There's your problem!

Try a reformat, refdisk and install something like NT Kernal base(Possibly Win2K as I know you don't have over 256 ) because Win 98 IMHO is very sluggish and very slow after its been all stressed out and it gets laggy after a short uptime since its memory management really is poor.

That should be your first option it is priceless. Second is what I'd say everyone said is heat.

run your PC without the case cover afte, using blower or vacuum cleaner to remove any dust cluster, if problem disappear very sure it's heat problem

My simple guesses as a fellow Willamette P4 owner:

1) DEFRAG YOUR HARD DRIVE!!!!! I think this could be the big culprit based on the description.

2) Thermal throttling. I'm guessing you have bad contact between the HSF and CPU. Try adding some ASII or a new HSF. It did wonders in my Dell.

Never even thought about the obvious thing of defragging the harddrive. Yes, that should be done first. Well, second right after running scandisk.

Yes, defrag and clean out some of useless sfuff first. Sounds like a throttle down problem though. What are load temps? What OS are you using? Can you check task manager and see how the CPU and memory cycles are being used?
