On my mobile contract I get as much free WAP access to the networks WAP gateway as I like. I would like to know if there is anyway that I can use the WAP connection to surf the web normally on my laptop. I know that WAP uses a PPP connection but the WAP gateways compile the wml pages into binary before transmission to reduce the amount of bandwidth needed. I am not sure if the WAP gateways will even transmit data that they don't recognise. Does anyone know if this is possible?? If so I guess I need something that uncompiles or translates the information that will be coming through, so that my web browser can use it.
Thanx in advance.

I have no clue what you're talking about. To my knowledge webpages have to be written in WML for this to happen, and i have never seen a page written in this. A WAP just acts like a hub, it isn't compiling anything. It does put an encryption on it if that is enabled, but none of this should change how you're viewing a website. It should just be a repeater, which is a very dumb priece of equipment which makes no routing decisions or anything of the sort.
Also you're not connecting through PPP, PPP is for dialup, wireless uses TCP/IP just like ethernet.
What do you need this for? If you're talking about getting raw data from packets then you need a card with a Prism 2 chip set and use a unix based OS.

Hmm. What I want to do is use my wap dial up number to access the net through my laptop. I intend on doing this by using my laptop to dial up to the net through my mobile using my wap dial up number and details. The reason for this is that the WAP dial up is free and unlimited. I have tried setting up dial up networking using my WAP dial up details and it made the connection O.K, but the browser wouldn't access and HTML pages (which is what I want it to do). Is there any way I can do this.

I'm confused here. You say WAP dial up. Is this a wireless ISP? When you say WAP I think Wireless Access Point. Dial up is with an anolog phone. So is this a dial up over your cell phone? Explain this a little more.

Ah, looks like we have got our wires crossed a touch. I mean WAP (Wireless Application Protocol). Basically I have a Nokia 7110 Mobile which allows me to surf the web (WML Pages) using a dial up in the UK called Genie. It is free for me to use the Genie service, so I wanted to know if it was possible to use the Genie service to surf the Web (HTML Pages) using my laptop plugged into the mobile and dialing up using the mobile to Genie's dial up number. This way I could surf the Web (HTML Pages) on my laptop for free while I'm out and about.
Hope this clarify's it a bit more. I think this might be where we reached the confusion as to the WAP protocol as WAP is its own stack of protocols. But it does negotiate the connection using PPP.
For more information this (http://compnetworking.about.com/library/weekly/aa123000a.htm) is the stack of WAP protocols.

O.K. I have connected a laptop from work to my mobile and setup dial up networking using the WAP dialup details and I can get a connection with no problem as it uses PPP to make the connection, but as I suspected I cannot browse any pages the computer makes the conection but nothing else happens. It just sits there and does nothing. Any idea how I might be able to get html pages throught the WAP gateway??

I am a little stuck with this. I'm sure it cant be impossible. Is there nothing I can do to get HTTP through WAP?? I'm sure there must be other people who want to do this as free WAP access is getting more and more common in Europe, but it still costs to dial up a normal ISP through your mobile.
Please Help!!!

:) :D :) I've got it. Using PPP & TCP/IP for the connection it does actually work (very slow though). Only problem being that they seem to have an access list set up on their server. It is only allowing me to view their own website in HTML. Any idea how I might try getting over this without hacking??
