View Full Version : Virus software for XP
I was running Norton Antivirus on my previous os(98) but since i upgraded it is one program i have not yet managed to make compatible. Even Nortons Antivirus 2000 still wont work. they do not offer any type of free updates to work with XP, so i want to no what is another good program?
Also are and freeware, or shareware anti virus programs worth getting, or do u get what you pay for?
Thankyou
Have you downloaded the compatibility update for the Windows update site? It was supposed to add compatibility for Norton 2000. I use McAfee VirusScan 6 and it works fine. PC-Cillin 2000 also works fine with XP.

I recommend PC-Cillin 2000. Works great with XP. Works fine on dual CPU's (even though they swear it wont run period), low system requirements wont choke your CPU and memory like Norton and McAfee, costs less, and all in all I feel that it protects better than Norton and McAfee.

I was using Nortons 2001 AV and I called Symantec and there was no way to upgrade or patch 2001 for XP usage.
I bought Norton Anti-Virus 2002 and it works great.
just wanna throw in my vote for pc-cillin 2000, too. all the settings are really easy to set up. it's liek 20 bucks, and you can d/l it from www.antivirus.com.

so besides the obvious price difference, why is PC-Cillin better than Mcafee??
does Pc-Cillin have better updating than McAfee?
I was asking because I am getting a new computer and have always used McAfee but if PC-Cillin is better I'd give it a serious try.
i found that pc-cillin's interface is very easy to use, but i've never used either of the the other two long enough to really tell if one is better or not. i just know that i d/l'ed the free version first because i was looking for something that was compatible with winxp, and pc-cillin is, and it's cheaper . . . never caught a virus, with it, either, but who's to say how much of that is just luck, you know? anyway, i'm sure any of them are competent enough to entrust your computer to, it just seems to be mainly a matter of personal preference . . .

I went with Norton and was pleased with the easy to update and qucik download for the program. I've always been a Mcafee user for years and think Norton AV 2002 is way better.
Maybe I'll try PC-Cillin next on my next computer since it looks so easy to use and the price is only $20-30 versus the Norton's 49.99 and you have to pay to update yearly after the first year
Still I went with Norton cause of the name and it looked like what I was looking for and made me feel more secure
Thanks for the advice guys.
