I have recently (10 days ago) purchased a gtx 285 FTW which is decently overclocked over the reference 285. I have been having issues with fallout 3 and the screen just freezing but the sound continuing. I had previously verified about a few weeks ago my cpu overclock to be 30+ hr prime 95 blend stable plus 24 hr occt stable, linpack stable for 150 sets, and ran memtest last night about 18 passes, no errors detected. Today I decided to try furmark because I had gotten a similar reult from my previous graphics card (eva gtx 260 core 216 superclock) when I pushed the overclock too high. Question is when I called tech support for my product I was told that The Black screen of death without computer restarting is a tell tale sign of a psu problem but maybe could be gpu related. Question is if my temps with the 285 FTW get to 92C under furmark stability test and the I get the BLACK screen, but when I reinstall the 260 Core 216 which i overclocked to FTW levels (for the 260 product) and it runs without issue (currently at one hour and only at 74c and stable per graph) .....is this most likely just a bad gpu or improper tim/heatsink mount, and not likely a psu issue.

My power supply is rated to run gtx 280 sli which i believe draws more power than the 285's. Also I believe If i read correctly that the difference in my 260 card at stock and the 285 is like 35 watts difference under load which should equate to about 3 amps difference on 12v rail....e.g. not a huge enough difference in power draw to make one fail and other pass.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

man.

have you tryed upping the fan speed duty cycle?

Yes I use evga precision installed only to run fan to 75% which worked wonders on the 260 core 216 card and was'nt overbearingly loud.

Also my previous post about the 3amp difference in the 2 cards was a guesstimate based on what some reviews at hardwarecanucks.com did on the different cards. I would assume since both cards (the 260 and the 285) are both relatively high end and pull alot of power if the psu was an issue it should be failing with the 260 at furmark stability test also if my Antec 850 was the culprit.

Try experimenting w/ your clocks.

First try reducing your CPU/FSB/RAM OC to stock and see what happens.

Then try reducing the gfx card clocks below stock and see what happens.

considering I had only purchased the product about 10 days ago from Tigerdirect I promptly called them for a RMA and initially was going to exchange the card for another one of the same make and model. I have instead decided to cancel the replacement and will be getting either a store credit or if i prefer a refund.

just to be sure I ran my gtx 260 core 216 which i put in my sons computer in this rig and sure enough it ran furmark like one hour without a hitch (as stated in previous post) so I think that would rule out anything except for the video card. I am just curious if these 285's with high factory overclocks only run stable if you mod them to work with water cooling or if they should be running that high with stock cooler. the 285 in it's default state was at least 18c higher at load temp than the 260

I had a blank screen a few days ago. All I did was switch the DVI cable on the card to the next slot. I haven't tried to see if the other slot works again but I can see the monitor now.

As temp wise man that sounds hot. Now mind you I personally don't like running furmark but ingames I get roughly 65-69C temps with a 65% fan speed set on my fan. As well my clocks are slightly lower then yours, and you have higher voltage than I do so that will add extra heat.

Oh and don't look at the amperage difference between the 2 cards... its the difference for at least the stock clock GTX285 is around 180-190W, and the GTX260 if not mistaken is around 135-145W.
