Can player's HDMI output go directly to monitor's in

Was wondering if a stand-alone Bluray player's HDMI output can go directly to a monitor's HDMI input? Or will one of the devices complain?

you shuold be able to as long as you have a HDMI-DVI cable no?
i've never tried but that's what im' assuming
