I have recently returned a gtx 285 ftw because of crashing problems during gaming and while running furmark. I have been considering running 2 4870's or 4890's because I can purchase them at the same price as the above card which I sent back for replacement/refund, and am interested to know If my Psu is a good match for these cards because on ATI's site it only lists 1 for the quantity of any cards to use with it but strangely enough it lists the 4870x2 which should draw about as much as 2 seperate cards in crossfire. Correct me if im wrong any input would be greatly appreciated.

You're perfect fine.
One HD4870/4890 need ~120-130W (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/radeon-hd4890_6.html#sect0) from PSU.

Yep, more then enough power. ATI recommends minimum of 600W for 2 4890's in CF and you are way above that.

not only that, but the brute stability of the Signature series...you could even manage on the 650w model :p

His system plus 2 4890s, with everything at 100% load, should use less than 550 watts.

you serious?!
i seem to overestimate even when i try to joke a bit.
then if that's the case, why are ppl buying 1kw PSUs and why are companies MAKING them?

i7 920 + GTX 295 (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/system-wattage_8.html#sect0) = 500W in Furmark + prime95 and ~360W in games.

That's a good question. Perhaps for bragging rights? Perhaps to run dual socket + 2 GTX295 + mountains of fans etc?

well if that's the case...
which would you get out of the Antec TP New 750w and Antec Signature 650w? <--same price
i will run a 4ghz cpu, 4850 crossfire and fans+hdd at most.
if tha'ts true, i'd rather get a Signature series PSU.
what the...GTX295 is nearly GTX260 sli'd isn't it?
that PLUS 4ghz i7...wth...500w?!?!

i dind't know pc power usage was that good. i woudl've thought 295 (being the top-of-the-line card for nVidia) took about 300-400w itself.

850W signature would be more than ok for that setup, you can do tri-fire with 4870's/90's with that PSU

I included 5 120mm LED fans in that calculation :) http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine is quite useful.

While we're on the topic of insanely excessive power supplies... my system of Q9450, 8GB RAM, 7 120mm fans and 1 250mm fan, sound card, 4870, 5 hard drives, and DVDRW, would hit 463 watts if everything was at 100% load.

Signature, without a question. One of the best regulating units in the market today.

I meant to answer why people are buying 1kw units, and why companies are manufacturing them.

Regarding sig vs tp, I'll choose sig of course :). But I had a chance to choose enermax vs sig, I'll chose the former for it's superb efficiecy, not that the sig is bad but enermax is great in this aspect.

Each of the GTX295 core is between a 260 and 285. So assuming 100% scalability, it would be 260 SLI + a wee bit more.

I don't know which GPU setup consumes more power; 2 GTX295 or 3 GTX 285. So chosing the setup consuming more power + 2 4ghz I7, then perhaps we have 800watts. (I have no idea) In this senario, I think I would choose a 1kw over a 850w one.

If you like so much efficiency you should take a closer look at Corsair HX750/850. AFAIK those are only 80+ Gold (http://www.80plus.org/manu/psu/psu_detail.aspx?id=25&type=2) certified PSU's on stores today.
And they are damn good performers of course, not only efficient.

that is beasty for sure.
but nowadays Corsair HX series doesn't seem special enough:p
so many people have them these days.

is the Antec Sig series, if not the best in efficiency, is it the king for rail stability?
i just noticed, as i skimmed through Jonnyguru.com, SG 850 has the only 10/10 rating  !!

when the HX750 comes out, if it's not too expensive i'll think about it. (currently not available at my retailers yet)

Here HX750 is $33 cheaper than Signature 650. ;)
Believe me, I have Signature 650 so I'm not (very) jealous on HX750 but if I hadn't Signature HX750 was my dream PSU. :)

Wow! That matches, if not beats the enermax revolution 85+!

Nice find. I guess I have to keep up more, even in the PSU department... I never thought PSU advanced so much.

Regarding making a link, you could use codes, or just press this icon:

i remember seeing a pic of your SG 650 now in a thread a while back.
well when it does come out i'll be sure to see which is cheaper. i'm a real Antec fanboy :p
woudln't mind a top-of-the-line SG in my 900.
the 650w is $230 here...cheapest i've seen the HX750 online is $250.

Sorry I never really followed up on this thread I ended up buying a gtx 285 but after it keep giving me issues returned it for a 275, so No Im not even coming close to using all my power supply "power" but I bought this supply with the mentality that too much is never enough. I also see the power supply as something that can potentially cross over to another system down the road and given that in one year I have rebuilt various parts of my computer quite a few times who knows what gup/cpu configuration I will end up next. I would love a i7 system with a gtx 295 once the price for both come down a bit.

we slowly swayed off topic lol.

you won't be disappointed with your Sig 850w. not many ppl hvae them here :)

EDIT: just wondering, when you were hooking up the wires, did you use up all of the hardwired cables?
i hear evreybody (reviews) complaining that it's got too many hardwired cables and that it's not completely modular.

velozzity
06-29-09, 02:46 PM
No I did'nt and In my case (any yours i see) it was a pain to hide all the wires, I had thought about modding the case but that would mean taking everything out again and considering that I have a few of the fans mounted in a non traditional fashion I would have to redo that too. But who knows I may end up with a fan controller and new fans soon given that Im running out of new things to put in it not barring a total new system (I7 of course)

velozzity
06-29-09, 03:10 PM
here are some pics of my current setup and this is the best I could do at hiding or trying to conceal organize wires.
74466

notice the fan is not attached in any way to a hard drive cage but in its mount recessed a little. The front fan also not attached to a hard drive cage and placed a few spaces down. This way I get airflow across the entire motherboard and graphics card. If you could see a side view of the case The 2 fans (uppermost and middle) are overlapping slightly so that air pushed in by the middle on reaches graphics card and is also pushed further into cpu area. (sorry that I got off subject)

Thanks but I still believe that eventually I will be cutting on the case some to further hide wires. I call what i have an organized mess.
